State of the Vikings: Football keeps Portland State afloat in lean times

I am sorry, but Rachel Bachman's stories are about as exciting as watching Portland city workers paint another bike lane. BORING.

It's good to see the numbers.

I wonder if there's a chance that Big Sky TV revenue will increase with more members being added to the conference. If so, that could push us into the black on the balance sheet if those projected numbers are near what will be actual.

I'd heard that PSU took a good hard look at dropping athletics in the recent financial woes. This data sort of points to PSU keeping athletics since a) it brings in ten plus million, and b) it's not really all that far under water. I honestly think that if football can return to being good (relative), donations will increase and push the balance sheet to the positive. A projected 11 million dollar budget for an athletic program that has a return on that investment could drive additional funding (i.e. additional success).

Martymoose:

Where would the TV money come from? Despite the fact of adding teams, it still is FCS football and none of the big media giants is going to step up and show FCS football. I am sure Altitude will continue, but they are a minor, minor player when it comes stepping up financially.

Now is we went to D-1, yes we could derive some financial gain.

Just a slight bump in TV revenue would do wonders for our program.

Oh, and we are D1 in football...

The athletic department is doing a good job, considering the state of the economy. If the football team starts producing some wins and we continue to play one or two FBS schools a year, TV might pick up some of those games thus boosting our revenue.
