Steven Long

One thing for sure, this kid is tough!

Portland State freshman running back Steven Long is expected to make a full recovery after having a non-cancerous growth removed from his brain on Sunday.

"Your test will become your testimony," Long tweeted on Sunday, "and your mess will become your message."

The former Lake Oswego star, Oregon's 6A offensive player of the year in 2011, was recuperating at OHSU, where the surgery was performed.

"Success!" Vikings coach Nigel Burton tweeted after Long's surgery. "He's in good spirits and (there) should be no reoccurrence."

Doctors discovered the growth after Long had suffered a seizure on Thursday.

A grayshirt freshman for the Vikings, Long rushed for 2,205 yards and 37 touchdowns as a senior at Lake Oswego High School in 2011 as he led the Lakers to the Oregon 6A state championship.

He played as a sophomore and junior at Sherwood High School, rushing for 2,530 yards and 33 TDs over those two seasons, and leading the Bowmen to the 5A state title in 2010.

Long, whose father, Jeff, played at Portland State from 1978-81, sat out last season due to an Achilles injury.

In spring practices this month before the seizure, Long had done much to show that a 5-foot-6 running back can hold his own against Division I talent, showing a knack for bouncing off tackles and making some tough blocks.

Crisis shows Portland State running back that 'you can't take life for granted'

According to the Oregonian #11 is back on the field again. I never would have believed he'd be back this soon. Is he actually practicing with the team or just on the sideline? Hopefully he stays healthy this time so we can finally see what the little guy can do in a Vikings uniform.

PSU football player back on the field after brain surgery

He's the smallest guy on the field, but one Portland State football player is overcoming big obstacles. Stevie Long has dodged plenty of tacklers in his day, but his biggest challenge came in the emergency room. But now he’s back on the field just over three months after surgery. Steven Long: 'It's hard not to smile'

Former Lake Oswego running back returns to the football field at Portland State, looking good in ahead-of-schedule comeback after brain surgery
In May, after undergoing surgery to remove an infectious lesion from his brain, Steven Long was given doctor's orders to have no contact on the football field for at least six months. His career, in fact, seemed in jeopardy.

Imagine the surprise to all, then, when the redshirt freshman running back reported for duty -- cleared for all activity -- when Portland State opened training camp earlier this month.

"Things change," said Long, who could be suited up Thursday when the Vikings open the season with a 7 p.m. game against Eastern Washington at Jeld-Wen Field. "The first day, I was able to do everything. It's hard not to smile."

When Long underwent an MRI in July, results showed the brain looking "really healthy," Long said Monday. "I was optimistic."

After discussion with Long's medical team, "everyone was on board to let me go full bore," he said. "Everything looked fantastic, so it was, 'Let's see what happens.' "

Long has gone through full workouts with his teammates for the past 3 1/2 weeks.

"I feel good," he said. "There are no symptoms with the head. I've communicated with the trainers, but I've stayed healthy. I'm back to normal -- back to being a normal kid."

Long is also recovering from Achilles' tendon surgery in May 2012.

"The Achilles is still getting there," he said. "I'm not 100 percent yet speed-wise. I'm still getting caught from behind at times. The doctor said it won't be completely healed until maybe the end of September. It takes time, but I feel good about it. I just have to be patient."

On Monday, coach Nigel Burton hadn't decided whether to redshirt the 5-7, 175-pound Long. The Vikings have a pair of veteran running backs in senior D.J. Adams and junior Shaquille Richard who are running 1-2 on the depth chart.

"Steven is doing really well, but he's kind of on the cusp" of redshirting or playing this season, Burton said. "Do we make a long-term or short-term decision? Coming in behind two veterans, it's a little tougher to break in with that much experience.

"But no question, he'll be a running back for us. He has all the skills. He could be a star. I think he'll be a great one some day."

Long was among the players returning punts during Monday's practice.

"Special teams is a goal, if that's what you have to start with," says Long, who wants to play this season but would be OK with a redshirt year. "And you never know. Twelve games is a long season. If there's an injury (at running back), you have to be ready. It's next man up."

WHAT ? WOW!

Knew he was good, but that was a ridiculous performance last night. He's lightning in a bottle.

Reading back on the stories the last two years makes it even more impressive. Achilles surgery, Brain Surgery, 250 yards. A very inspirational young man with a huge heart. I've never heard of or even imagined someone playing D1 football after brain surgery.

If we could match his playmaking abilities with a a decent passing attack we'd be winning these games.

As depressing as its been lately following this team, it's nice to have something to look forward to. The little guy is fun to watch.

I missed the game yesterday, and it sounds like I missed one hell of a coming out party for Mr. Long. If he can give the Viks that kind of big-play threat every week, that's quite a weapon.

Maybe everyone knows this already. Somehow I missed it. I found myself wondering why Long wasn't playing at all. Turns out he is on Western Oregon's roster.

I will never forget the game he totally went off and looked like Barry Sanders, I think it was against NAU.

I was wondering the same thing about Steven. I was even to the point of questioning "maybe he was a senior last year".....I was having a senior moment.

I'm wondering if he was just too small. He got bounced around pretty good at this level.

I read somewhere this summer that he had transferred, but it didn't mention where (my contacts didn't know either and Google was no help),

WOU is saying he is a junior. I thought he was going to be a senior this year. Sounds like he had an awesome kick return against Sac State. Didn't sound like he had a good game against Montana State (didn't sound like anyone on WOU had a good game really).
