Still concerned about D but.....

For a day where VA missed or had WRs drop balls that could've added another 2-3 scores this offense is scary.

Still comes down to defense being average not great to get EWU to Frisco.

Interesting to see how SHSU does once their all on the same page. They have a ton of speed. EWU won't see that level of athletes after the UW game until the 2nd or 3rd round of playoffs.

I may have homer vision, but I am very optimistic about the defense. The line had surprising penetration when facing an experienced line. Props to them. We have a lot of young guys and I think they will peak by season's end.

We need to mesh ourselves and we will be scary.

SHSU will be one of the top programs this year, i think you can bank that.

I acknowledge that SHSU had great athletes but I'm in the minority because I think that team will implode. I think their team will struggle throughout the year keeping things together and I really don't see them making the playoffs. They are going to get destroyed by LSU and morale will go in the unrecoverable toilet.
Their new offense requires a qb who can throw. Their guy can run fast but he's not shifty and he's not accurate. His only potential salvation is that he has a crew of receivers that will get so open he can't miss. Aside from two big plays that accounted for over 100 yards of offense and 14 points, they didn't really do much. And, did you notice that when we lined up with a blitz they stopped and all looked to their sideline for guidance? That might be lack of familiarity with the offense but it begs the question; when do their coaches trust them to let r' rip? Mid season or later?
Defensively, their line is solid but we rolled up the rushing yards on them. Clearly, our o-line and RB's are very good but their linebackers and DB's are not as fast as advertised. Their coaches knew it too because their strategy of dragging someone down if you get beat is a coaching tactic. If it would have happened once, but happening over and over tells me the coaches told them to give up the 15 yards instead of the TD.
I am being as objective as I can and not trying to cast stones at them. If they do wind up being a good playoff team, it will be evidence of really good coaching. Keeler's aptitude for making excuses will rub off on them so I really don't see that happening. Just my $.02

I don't see the sky falling yet as far as our D. I will say I am biased to EWU but after watching the game again and seeing our mistakes I think most of the mistakes can be chalked up to 1st game mistakes and playing live speed. Our starting LB's did not play in the spring and the younger players have been getting lots of reps to prepare for the adversity that will come throughout a very long season.

SHSU was a very athletic team with great speed and scored 35 points on us. 7 of those were from the pick 6 and another 14 points on 2 plays that after watching again were bad mistakes that I am certain will be corrected. 317 yards were gained on us through the air and 225 on the ground. Again when you look at those 2 plays they equal 132 yards. Take those 2 plays out and you have 30 carries for 93 yards or a 3.1 yards per carry which is not bad considering there was no viable scouting of SHSU before the game and there was no real knowledge of what personnel they had prior to the game due to 10+ drop downs. I also noticed that our LB's were playing slow agianst the read option which I am sure is a result of learning from mistakes last year and being vulnerable on the outside edge. Both LB's were playing wider in alignment then in the past. The secondary takes time to gel and the only way to do that is with live play which between this game and the next 2 we will get that taken care of before we enter the BSC games.

SHSU had 15 possessions where they scored 4 times on offense with a total of 85 plays. That is less than 6 plays/possession. This was a great game for our team to play as I believe there is a ton of film that will lead to a lot of knowldge and developement of scheme, technique and mental preparedness. This D showed signs of being very good with a little more consistency which will come over time.

My :twocents:

no buts about it. Bottom line over 520 yards 35pts given up against a team who suppose to be devastated from graduation and with a new coaching staff. Won't get into details about getting more passing yards than us with a QB who was terrible. Not to mention the amount of wide open wr's who were more open than I've ever witnessed.. that he missed. All the hubbub about yards being on a certain amount of plays...don't play (especially when they left so many). Concerned I am...bottom line.

**We have the talent on defense.

Agreed. They only put together 2 or 3 actual drives together. 'Twas the big play that hurt us most, which should be a relatively easy fix.

What do you think would have been the result if they were not called for sooo many penalties and their QB was just a little more accurate? Could have been ugly!

There is no argument that we got beat several times in the seconday and that if they were on they would have scored more points but the same could be true for us as well. Both teams played like it was their first game. Our running game separated us and the score.

Penalties favored us but I believe the SHSU D was penalized the most in the form of multiple PI's, Facemasks, and Personal Fouls (being a dumbass) flags. The biggest flag that helpped our D was when McCarthy got high lowed at depth on 1st down resulting in 1st and long. There were a couple of false start flags that were also thrown in that are alawys nice but after watching the game again most of the penalties favored our offense.

What I didn't see was our D getting their asses kicked accross the field and sustaining multiple long drives. True we did get beat in the secodary by some very fast WR's. I saw 2 plays where we got caught with our eyes wrong and we paid for it. Our offense scored on 8 out of 16 possession theirs scored on 4 of 15. Stats vary but the average college football team is scoring between 28 and 35 points per game these days. Not like the days when I was playing. Rules have chaged favoring offenses throwing the ball.

I do not feel like this was our best effort but believe that we will continue to improve and have a pretty solid foundation to build on. The corner spot is always tough and we knew this would be a tough spot to fill after Sr. CB graduating. This will get resolved.

Good post. I have some concerns on defense, but hopefully the unit will grow and gel into a consistent unit. We did have to replace quite a few guys from last year.
