Now that our reg season home games are over and we have a chance to win back-to-back conf titles it makes me sit back and ask, does athletics actually care about the success of the teams? Obviously they "care" because when teams win they keep their jobs.

But lets be honest, we have arguably one of the best football teams in school history (i would argue last year was) and a coach who works his tail off and it shows on the field, but no one gives a crap! The team has gotten better as the year has wore on and the attendance has gone down. So that is where i ask does athletics actually care or do they live by the model "just good enough".

I know we go after marketing for a pathetic showing year after year but at what point does it get to the athletics as a whole not holding each other accountable. I drive from ogden to slc mon-friday and I take harrison to 89 so i drive by weber EVERY SINGLE DAY and i have not once this year seen anything about football. Not. One. Thing. Each person who works in athletics drives to work on the same path each day and sees the same amount of nothing everyday and says nothing. Regardless if they are coaches trainers administrator advisers whatever. If people are mentioning things and it falls on deaf ears, now its a university issue. Does the university actually care about athletics? Bringing in money? Engaging the community, building a base, and something to rally around? Weber has always been labeled a "commuter" school. But yet we find those passionate fans looking for something to latch on to. What does weber do to capture that? Nothing.

When coach mac was still around I remember we had 14k in the stands for homecoming, thought that was a pretty good showing! I get basketball has been our staple and it has fallen on their own issues (we wont go into that) but football is damn good and the community either doesnt know, or doesnt care and it needs to be fixed.

Anyway to sum up the rant that has been made so many times before, lets see if we get a home playoff game. If we do what is athletics going to do to fill the stands and supports the #3 team in the nation.

7329 Montana State

One gimmick sell-out game and no other games over 9145 fans. Remove the gimmick game and the average is 8291 fans

2017 Attendance

8882 Montana Western
9450 UC Davis
9135 SUU
8912 Montana
9539 Idaho State
6876 WIU Playoff game

8799 Average Attendance
One incredibly under reported playoff game all other games above 8800 fans. Remove the playoff game and the average is 9184 fans.

Apples to apples, attendance was slightly better last year than 2005. Not saying that is ok. But reality is attendance did not change much from 2005.

2018
8455 South Dakota
8668 Northern Colorado
8211 EWU

8251 Average Attendance

Comparing this years numbers makes me concerned. We heard that season ticket sales were up 10% over last. Attendance is down 500 fans per game over last year. Possibly we are now reporting our attendance more accurately than prior years? Possibly we are reporting butts in seats rather than tickets sold? Maybe we aren't giving away as many as we used to. It would be interesting to see actual revenue numbers for each year. Regardless, it is rather alarming that given last years success and this years success, Weber has failed to markedly improve in attendance.

Wow nice work! Thats a lot of data crunched real fast.
I guess that is what i am trying to point out. With the successes of this year and last what is holding the attendance back? Weber has had some good teams under Mac and the sear/john l experiment was bad but didnt hurt attendance as much? So what is going wrong?
