Stott Center

The Stott Center rightfully gets criticized and we ultimately need a new arena but if we were to pack it every night with 1500 fans, it could have a lot of atmosphere and be very intimidating.

There are a lot of other schools with smaller arenas (albeit on a different scale). For instance, Duke's arena seats only 9K. That is tiny compared to North Carolina's 20K seat arena but it is very intimidating nonetheless. The fact that Stott is so tiny can also make it somewhat intimidating since everyone is so close to the floor.

We need to help Torre Chisholm with ideas to do whatever it takes to get that place packed. We could be doing an email campaign with suggestions on how to do [email protected].

I still think we need a pep band, double-headers with high schools, etc.

U have a good point...

If you pack it it will be very loud. ISU is a good example, they used to play in Reid Gym which was about 3,000 seats. It was very loud when they would pack it and the ceiling was low so it was very loud which made for a very good home court advantage.

Luckily 2 yrs ago they did us all a favor by moving back to Holt Arena which seats 8,000 and takes away the home court advantage since they only get 2-3000 per game.

For those who have not been to Holt it is like a big empty old airport hanger. It's even cold in it.

The Stott Center is what it is, but it was great in the 2nd half of the WSU game. It was loud, it was shaking, and it was a home court advantage.

Don't get me wrong, it's probably one of the worst D1 facilities in the country, but when it's packed and rowdy, it's a very tough place to come in and get a victory. Only San Jose State has won there this year, and if not for that terrible blocking call at the end of regulation, we'd be undefeated at home this year...

By now, you all know my feelings on this issue. Part of the reason we don't get packed home games is because they are at Stott. Fans, casual fans and well-healed boosters especially, don't want to go there. We need a new arena.

I posted this little thing at "the other board."

PSU should be working to become the "host institution" the next time the NCAA tournament comes to the Rose Garden. University of Oregon is the POC this time around, but in future years, they're likely to be pimping their new arena for tournament games.

Here's the thing: Boise State gets it every 3 to 4 years, and guarantees ticket-purchasing opportunities for season ticket holders. Imagine that for PSU.

PSU should be asking to "observe" UO's role for next year's games in Portland.

I'm thinking that this will eventually create enough sponsor interest to get something larger than Stott.

Exactly! WE should be hosting the NCAAs in Portland.

Somewhat beside the point, but wasn't PSU the host institution when the women's regionals were in Portland at the RG a few years ago? If so, then it seems the Athletics Dept. would have some experience with this type of issue. I could be wrong, though.

Old AD, I think. Not totally sure PSU and UP didn't share, BTW. Furthermore, there is a difference of scope between tournaments.

I love the Stott and will miss the intimacy should we ever rebuild... However what is good for the goose is good for PSU, so hopefully we will move on up. Just like the Jefferson's.

Reason number 1001 why PSU needs a new arena - When we are good and get to host the conference tourny, it will actually be a homecourt advantage that doesn't require us to adjust to a different court.

A number of problems with the RG:

1. Too big, no way PSU will draw that many fans.
2. Scheduling, it would be slotted behind Blazers and Lumberjax (minor league lacrosse) games along with concerts/other events.
3. Distance.

The Memorial Coliseum might have worked but now that it is being converted for use primarily by Portland's hockey team it is less available.

PSU used the Garden as home for the first 2-3 years, IIRC. The attendance numbers I kept seeing were smaller than what they get now.

Also, economic reality: RENT SUCKS. When you don't have an on-campus arena, the people controlling the building usually get somewhere between a substantial cut and the vast majority of revenues for concessions, parking, etc. On campus, PSU would get 100%.

Also, economic reality: Bad enough that PSU doesn't sell many season tickets, meaning not having a pool of cash from which to work in the first place. They probably sell more than they did in RG. No incentive to get people to buy tickets in advance means more penalty payments for utilities and other things down the line.

Not even MC does the job here. PSU HAS to have its own arena.

Very few colleges, even big time programs, have had sustainable success renting out professional arenas. Programs like Georgetown or Villanova manage to do well playing in off campus NBA arenas, but they are exceptions. Examples like USC and Miami come to mind as schools that bolted for on campus venues as soon as they could, and got better on the court as a result.
