SUU (01-30-2016)

Weber up 45-16 at the half. This game feels like Weber is playing another NAIA school. SUU is a small team and doesn't match up well with Weber at all. It isn't helping them that they can't hit an open jumper. SUU is shooting 8-32 (25%) at the half.

Seems to me that the refs kept this from being a 50 point loss for SUU.second half fouls were keeping weber from playing tight D.Sure liked Williams tonight.

We were crisp in that first half, but we let our foot up off the pedal in the second. However, it was good to see the whole bench get extended minutes and play well. For an extended time we had 4 freshmen on the floor. It was good to see Williams come in and be a major contributor. He played both the 4 and the 5 at times. You can really see his potential as a 3 for next year. :thumb: :thumb:

Wow the Reffing is poor this season. It's usually bad, but this season it has been exceptionally bad. I'm thinking the consortium can pay more so the best refs are part of that and the Sky is getting the leftovers. You can tell too. There is no consistency, fluid, and in many cases abject confusion with calls. Two issues: traveling and hand fouls have been especially galling. 25 second half fouls in a blow out? Uh...huh?! The Big Sky should be absolutely ashamed and embarrassed.

Yes, it's true we are getting the least experienced refs in the country. I think they are doing the best that they can in the situation created for them by the BSC. To me, the problem really lies with BSC administration. Yes, it has an effect on the flow of the game and the players become confused, unsure, about how to play the game. However, the biggest problem comes when we step outside of the BSC and have to play with the real rules. This is not the fault of the officials, it's the fault of the BSC. The refs are just following instructions. :coffee:

Speaking of reffing, I never saw where Braxton threw an elbow to pick up his flagrant foul. Was that a legitimate call? Did any of you see the elbow thrown? Braxton didn't seem to complain much about it (that I saw), but maybe he didn't care either way since Weber State was well in control of the game.

I didn't see what warranted Zack's flagrant foul. However, I did see Cannon take a forearm to the face in the first half. The ref made the foul call, but failed to issue a flagrant. A little curious if you are one of those who likes consistency. I might add that they didn't go to the monitor to look at it for 15 minutes. We all had time to go for an adult beverage while they tried to make something up. One thing I have found curious this whole BSC season, is that hand checking is called closely everywhere except during a full court press. When pressing, it seems that hand checking is not against the rules. That seems to go for pushing, grabbing, hacking, spitting, biting, tripping and making bad faces as well. Also, jumping out on the floor and stomping your feet in front of a ref is not a TF. Likewise, slapping the floor and cussing at a ref. Also, when attempting to get a tie up, no fouls will ever be called. Jumping on a guy's back, hitting him in the head, none of that matters if you are going for a tie up. Just one more thing, if you are in your defensive half court and touch your opponent with your hand, it is a foul. However, if you are the offensive player, you can use your hands as much as you want while moving the defender out of the way, ball in hand or not.

OK, rant over. :wall:

I'd have to watch a few more non-Big Sky Conference games to see how the referees fair there, but in the few non-Big Sky games I've watched (I usually just look at final scores), hand checking seems to be very closely called in all of the NCAA. It helped that they lowered the shot clock to speed up the game, but calling a foul for every little thing mostly erased that benefit.

I'll take your word for it as far as the Big Sky Refs are concerned. You seem to pay close attention to that and are in the know, and I wish the Big Sky would do something about it as well--though I think most conferences will complain about their refs. PAC-12 fans especially are pretty loud about how much they hate their referees.
