SUU Fires WBB Coach

Only surprise here is that it took SUU a whole 8 days to do it… and that he apparently had a 5-year contract (or he somehow got an extension at some point).

Expected, they had some talent but the past three years were awful. Since J.R. Payne left they've been really bad and nobody literally gives a damm in Cedar City about women's basketball.

They've got a beautiful arena and can't draw flies.

Yet their WBB team drew almost double the fans of Idaho's.

Their men's program has some potential, at least. They do have nice facilities, plus they've been a respectable 4th. in the league in attendance despite having an awful W/L record over the past decade.

Judgment of the AD, assuming HE was the one approving any extension, has to be questioned at this point.

Idaho has trouble drawing anybody for basically anything with Washington State of the Pac-12 just seven miles down the road.

I've got to say this for Jon, you can certainly question some of the things he does and says but you can't question his ability to coach or recruit in a place that doesn't care about women's basketball and is in the middle of basically nowhere.

UI has a lot of things going for it compared to ISU in women's basketball (money, better travel situation) but as far as fan interest? They can't hold a candle to ISU supporters in women's basketball.

I wonder if Washington State looks over the border to fill its women's basketball coaching position.

Hadn't thought of that but you do wonder now that you have brought it up.

I don't know if Jon would leave Ferenz and Pierce before their senior seasons but I guess if the price is right...
