SUU Game is Big

What do we know about SUU?

They got blown out at Oregon. Gave up 77 points. They got blown out at Sac State. Gave up 54 points. They blew out Steven f Austin on the road and scored 51 points. They narrowly got past Northern Iowa at home on a last gasp field goal, 24-21. That one was probably their best game.

Looks to me like they are a fair offensive team with a questionable defense.

One common opponent, Sac. We beat Sac 31-24. They lost to Sac 27-54. On paper, you would think that we are a 30 point favorite. However, I expect them to put up a good fight. I expect them to play with a lot of emotion, for at least one half. Much will depend on how stiff our D is. :coffee:

The real question is, how are we going to pack the house? There is no reason we can't get 12k for this one! When the team is good, it's time to spend the marketing dollars! Time to wipe the floor with SUU and let them know this our state and they are merely a guest in OUR conference!

They are going to come in fired up. They haven't forgotten what we did to them last year on their field. All this common opponent, who we've played, how we played stuff can be thrown out the window. This is a completely different game, it's both team's super bowl. It's also huge because a win in this game helps win a few instate recruits to our side. Weber needs a loud packed house, Weber should be marketing the heck out of this game (heck they have two weeks to do it) Stewart Stadium should be rocking next weekend. There will be a lot of emotion in this game and Weber needs to make sure they come out collected so we don't have a repeat of what happened the last time in Ogden.

Defend the Beehive Bowl. GO WILDCATS.

I have not been successful finding an active SUU fan forum. Does anyone here know of one?

The only one I know about is the one which is linked at the bottom of the page. But that place is more barren than a void.

The question that needs to be asked now, is what is being done on campus to get students out? Is there anything announcing the game to the students? Have the student leaders planned anything to get more students out, such as: after game dance, food, music, tuition waiver, promotions, rivalry speech? This is not the time to be reactive, but to be proactive! Weber's issue isn't a lack of opportunity or ability, but a lack of ambition and drive. Is the issue leadership or leadership advising?

Doesn't this game have a traveling trophy attached to it? Uh, use that as a motivator. Why don't we know about it and where is it stored or exhibited?

This is a great opportunity for WSUSA. They should invite, or better yet, challenge, every student group on campus and potentially partner with Student Recruiting, Student Alumni, ROTC, LDSSA, Christian Fellowship, and The Newman Center to get more students out on Saturday. Also, this is a great time to bring interested high school seniors onto campus (give them a voucher, if they come, to return to the game against Montana for half price or 5 tickets for $10-$20 deal). Why not actually have a traditional pep rally (on campus) Thursday night? If you want to be a traditional college campus you have to act like one. My nephew received a text message from the school reminding him about the homecoming game. I thought that was brilliant. Keep it up! But, there has to be more done in the community and especially on campus. This is a huge game!! Pack the Stewart!

I know the community is a much harder deal, but I think all GA tickets should be $5, with reserved tickets being $8-$10. A family of 5 can get everyone in for $20 (if it is a bigger than 5 family, then sell the extra tickets for $2 each). Really get the word out to paint the town purple and get Ogden fired up for its Wildcats.

N Ogden Cat, I've never been to Ogden, are there many things to do there entertainment wise? I ask this because Cal Poly has similar challenges getting students out to support the team. Part of the problem on the central coast of California is its only ten minutes from the beach and there's plenty to do there that doesn't involve football.

I think the SUU fan is a mythical creature. I think you have a better chance of finding Bigfoot than finding a SUU fan to talk with. Don't get me wrong, there will be people wearing red, sitting in the stands. Don't try to have a conversation with them, they will just return a blank stare. It may have something to do with the high altitude in Cedar City. Talking may require using too much oxygen.

Its mostly to do with the fact that there are 3 fbs teams really close to Weber and the students who attend Weber are usually already fans of one of those schools and wouldnt go to a Weber game. Regardless of how good they are

Ogden is a bigger city than SLO, but the cultures are quite similar. Like SLO, Ogden has a lot of outdoor activities. We don't have the ocean, but we have lakes, reservoirs, and rivers. Both places have the mountains close by, with all the hiking and biking that go with them. I would say that our home towns are more the same than they are different. :coffee:

I'll do a story on the trophy, or at least mention it in my game preview, next week. Until last year's game, no one on the Weber State side knew about it. Right now they're calling it the Beehive Bowl, but I understand there's coordination between the two schools about changing the name and having a different trophy (current one has the old WSU shield logo). I think they're sticking with the beehive theme. Beehive Battle, Beehive Brawl, etc. Jokingly, I'd would like to see the names of the schools mixed, calling the game the ThunderCat Classic (Hoooooo!!!!) or something that includes Sylvester and Tweety Bird.

Joking aside, SUU has had this game marked on their calendars. They've used that loss to WSU a year ago as motivation for this entire season. They're going to be juiced for the game, that's for sure. I think a decent rivalry is budding, and I hope fans will recognize that and the high quality of a team the Wildcats have this year.

I'm hoping the Mustangs can roll into Cedar City this Saturday, rough up SUU and come out with our first win. Maybe CP will soften them up a little for the Wildacats!

Well...the worst week of the season has ended. We are past the bye!! We will find out whether or not after the SUU game, if Weber beat bye or not. Under Jay the Cats are 2-1 after the BYE Week. They lost to Cal Poly at home 24-30 in 2014, beat ISU at home 35-14 in 2015, and beat PSU at home 14-10 last year.

all I c an say is SUU better play a much cleaner game against Weber State than they did against Cal Poly if they expect to win. They allowed the Mustangs to hang around far too long in that game.

SUU is coming in hot and angry.

http://www.thespectrum.com/story/sp...s-eager-another-chance-weber-state/744819001/

On Oct. 22, 2016, nine minutes changed the whole dynamic of the Southern Utah-Weber State rivalry.
In those nine minutes, the Wildcats rallied from 22 points down in the fourth quarter to steal a victory from SUU in Cedar City. Weber State stole the win, it stole the rivalry trophy, and, come season’s end, stole a playoff berth.
WOW!

It sounds like these guys have been beating themselves up for a whole year now. No wonder they got the shizz kicked out of them in Sacramento. It sounds like we ruined their lives. I never thought of SUU as a rivalry, but it seems that they are totally consumed by hatred. Yes, they will be coming in hot and highly emotional. That may carry them for a short time. However, that sort of thing usually drops you faster than it picks you up. That is probably what happened to them last year. They were too emotional and dropped flat at the end of the game. This should be an interesting game. I'm hoping for a huge crowd. The weather looks good for the game.

Hate to burst anyone's bubble but the latest forecast for Sat in Otown is high - 51/ low - 34 with 50%+ chance of rain. Now I know that some here really like the cold rain/snow conditions but I'm tellin' ya that a good sizeable crowd isn't likely with that. Of Course the weather can change quickly & hopefully those fair-weather-fans will show up for a instate game that possibly features the best (maybe only) chance for a Utah Div I football team to win this weekend. (That was mentioned on the KSL-TV sports news.) :o

Then those fans can stay home, One of my favorite Weber State games I ever attended was played during a freaking monsoon in 2008 against the then ranked #3 Montana Grizzlies. Everyone who stays home could miss a pretty epic game regardless of who wins.

To those scared of bad weather there are these things that were invented, they are called coats and umbrellas....Buy one.

As for me I was sitting on the side of the mountain last weekend in the Uintas in 30 degree weather with a wind chill that made it feel more like 20 degrees. So nothing short of a hurricane is going to keep me from going to the Beehive Bowl this weekend.

:agree:

The forecast has been changing the past day or two and will continue to change some the next day or two. The source I tend to use most is forecasting 46° and 0% chance measurable precip. at game start, and 40° with a 1% chance by the end of the game.

"a good sizeable crowd isn't likely" period. The weather is just another reason we like to use as a reason this community and student body is lame when it comes to WSU attendance.

Hey N.Ogden...I got a text today advertising the game and a coupon for 5 tickets for $25 deal. I hope that that wasn't sent to students. Could really confuse them. Since they get into the games for free and can, from what I understand, still get 4 guests in with them. I hope they don't think, "I have to pay to go? I'm not going."

Good to see that Athletics is still reading the forum. A health forum is a good measure of interest in a schools athletics. If I was them, I would want to see a lot more posting. But, that is me.
