SUU over ISU?

Southern Utah at WSU---A preview of years to come in the Big Sky as the Wildcats finally have an instate "rival" to play. Whether it replaces the long standing rivalry with Idaho State remains to be seen, but Southern Utah is good, having already beaten Sacramento State and also has a big win over UNLV. They would enjoy a road win at the expense of WSU. However, it won't happen...WSU 34, Southern Utah 17.

got me thinking...

Can SUU replace ISU as our biggest rivals?

They should replace ISU as our rival - by definition a rival is someone who can compete with you and actually beat you once in a while.
WSU has dominated ISU in basketball and football for many years. Thus, I don't consider them a rival.

Our rival right now is Montana in that we compete with them for conference championships. SUU has the potential to become our rival (in state and also has the potential for fielding quality competition).

YES!
SUU is actually good, while ISU still sucks and has for years. Also SUU is in Utah which also adds to the rivalry, due to the fact they heavily recruit Northern Utah.

Both schools are on I15 in smaller market towns. ISU has a much larger studentbody with a better accademic and athletic tradition. SUU will grow as Cedar City grows. Right now, they are everyone's little brother. I hope they become a rival. For now, it's a fun game and not a rivalry. Although ISU has been down for a while now, they are still our rivals in many ways, not the least of which historically. :stir:

The T-Birdz can't become a rival until they get a fan board. Honestly I didn't think a school was allowed to join the Big SKy until they have a fan board. Maybe they got some kind of waiver on this for a few years.

Our games vs ISU still generate excitement. Some of our highest attended games are the ones vs ISU, We dont usually draw well for SUU BB games, that might change now, but I think we can keep a rivalry with ISU, I would like to, the more rivalries the better.

Anybody know the reasons we havent played in 5 years?

Probably, because we didn't want to pay them and we didn't want a home and home contract without them being in the confrense. Without them being in the BSC it was always a question of who you might get for officials in Cedar City. They would usually just round up a local bishop or two, a mixture of local cops and UHP officers, and a couple of students on work study. Knowing the actual rules of the game was optional. Now that they will be in the BSC, things should improve slightly. There is still the problem of veteran refs getting to choose many of the games they do for the BSC. The best refs aren't going to choose Cedar City. Any way you cut it, it will be an improvment from what has happened in the past. :twocents:

I don't understand why a good veteran ref would choose Geeley over Cedar City or Bozeman, Flagstaff etc etc over Cedar City? I read where most schools charter directly to Cedar City now and I am sure the refs fly commercial to St. George (50 miles down the street) the Big Sky pays for all that and their car rental. Now a football field is pretty much a football field other than grass vs carpet but don't see that as a huge issue to a ref. SUU wont get 25,000 fans to a game but is that good or bad to a ref? I think the pay wouldn't change any at all. Why wouldn't a veteran ref not want to ref a game in CedarCity, oh maybe its the night life, maybe they like to get bombed at the bars in SLC, Spokane, Portland, or sacramento the night before. Sometimes I wonder about that when it comes to some calls on game day, ya must be the night life. I was just wondering. :coffee:
