SUU was legit...

...and we were second best for all but about the last 10 minutes of today's game.

I thought SUU would be mid-pack in the Big Sky but I'm rethinking that one. I thought they were as talented as anyone we've played so far outside of Nevada. It's hard to say if they were more talented than Montana State- only because we played so bad against Montana State it was tough to gauge how good they were. But other than being competitive talent-wise with Eastern and MSU, I'd say they'd be quite a bit better than every other team.

I have NO IDEA how Southern Utah lost to NAU. Truthfully, I have no idea how they lost 5 games out of 11 this year. Maybe it just took a while for that offense to gel, but they sure looked dynamic and sharp today.

Just got back from the game. SUU is the read deal. Best QB I've seen and probably the best QB if he were in the Big Sky. Him and Fesi Sitake sliced and diced all day long. They said Fesi Sitake (#9) started playing for SUU in 2004. They were/are better than EWU and would be in the top of the Big Sky standings. Took some luck to beat this team and some big plays to overcome.

Which makes us better than them. We should end up in the top three after today and not sure that has ever happened to EWU, but deserved. Don't really understand all the negative shit on here all the time. This could be the best team in EWU history and everyone keeps bitching endlessly. There is no way SUU was better than us today or any day. Bring on Idaho State and the playoff's. Go Eags.

Easy there, Wineguy! If you want to see endless bitching hop on over to the eGrizz blog and you'll look more kindly at our little bit of grousing! :| Seriously, we didn't play our best game but like every game I've seen this year, this team has a resilence and ablilty to rebound. If the fans will hang together just as much and come out to cheer this team on then we will have earned a place in the team's heart (I know they have mine)!!

I had a great convo with JC Sherritt tonight about the mentality of the team. He and I both agreed that they didn't play their best game, but at the same time it was good enough to win against a very talented SUU team.As mentioned on other threads, SUU is easily a mid to high-tear BSC team right now, and we should enjoy this victory as if we beat an in-conference foe. As I've mentioned before, these guys truly smell the blood in the water and have the mindset necessary to beat the everliving shit out of ISU next week. They wont be taking next week lightly (confirmed by JC and others today via personal convo), as the implications are clear.

GO EAGS!

Also....GO COUGS!!! Congrats on the big win against OSU, and way to shut up Jacquizz Rodgers. That little boy needs to learn how not to talk shit.

Epic game to say the least. The difference between this team and years past is the fact that we wouldn't have won all the close games we have won this year. Even great teams aren't going to blow everyone out every game, and this team knows how to win the close ones. So refreshing.

Just rewatched the game and two calls screwed the Birds. Minafee scored (not fumbled) in the endzone 2nd quarter. Sorenson fumble 3rd quarter... arm was definitly going forward and was an incomplete pass.

same official "missed" both calls.

Probably just a sore loser

GOOD LUCK EAGLES

birdman, you're not a sore loser. Those were a couple of the "luck" plays i mentioned earlier. I was at that end and it was a TD not a fumble and even if it was it looked like SUU recoveredit. And SUU's QB's arm was going foward and should have been an incomplete pass. Saw a few other poor calls(or lack of calls) on both sides but those were huge. Don't feel alone we have been in games where the wrong calls cost us games...welcome to the BSC. Two more years of Sorenson? oh my!

Don't want to beat a dead horse, but I just watched the highlight clip (0:23 mark) on KXLY - http://espnnorthwest.com/article/2010/nov/13/mitchell-kaufman-leads-eastern-another-win/. It's hard to tell from their camera angle if the runner was down before the ball came out, but it's very close and from that angle J.C. took the runner down on the one and the runner didn't break the plane. They follow that shot with a close-up of the pile in the end zone, and Paul Ena definitely came up with the recovery.

As for the other call - that falls in the "luck" category Obzerver mentioned before. All credit to SUU, birdman, you have a great team and QB.

I was going to comment on the upcoming game with SUU but didn't get registered in time. I was going to advise the Eagles to be very wary of the T Birds as I have been following them for several years now and see them as an up and coming power. You obviously found that out and did a good job of beating them in a close game. They should be strong contenders in the Big Sky starting next year. After polishing off ISU and their new coach it will be interesting as to how the seeding and pairings go for the playoffs. It looks like you guys have a very strong team, probably your best in years and could go deep into the playoffs. Good luck until if and when we meet. By the way I have read on past postings that the Hens are on Black Fallin's s**t list and wonder why he harbors resentment to the U of D among others?

Lots of bad calls in this game, the fumble recovered in the end zone simply wasn't one of them.

+1

The fumble into the endzone/recovery was legit. On the other play at midfield, I thought his arm was moving forward, but the ball was intercepted... I never saw it hit the ground (from my perspective from up top during the game), but I haven't seen a replay of it yet. I thought it was a pick, not a fumble. If the ball hit the ground, then I agree it was a bad call and it should have remained SUU ball. But, as has already been mentioned, that's typical BSC officiating... we have the worst refs in the country. SUU played a great game, and I'm not looking forward to face them every year.

all

Officials and the calls are part of winning. The Team needs to make its own success. That includes luck. To win this type of game SUU has to win the Turnover battle. Also SUU needed to bring there very best game to win at EWU. The effort was there but a very good EWU team beat them. SUU is making the effort and has the commitment from the admin to win in the Big Sky. The next few years should be great for the building of a successful team in Cedar City. The Officials will always bring the Human element to the FCS (1-AA) football and that is why it is so fun to watch (No replay and real football).

Good Luck to the eagles in Playoffs. Your success will be a measure of what SUU has to do to accomplish its goals. It has been a great year in the long sundry, somewhat boring history of SUU football. SUU is trending in the right direction.

Warm Regards

FWIW Birdman, I thought Southern Utah was as good or better than anyone we've faced so far in the Big Sky. I think you guys have a chance at becoming a real playoff threat on an annual basis if you keep developing and fielding players like the ones we saw in Cheney last week. I'd say that you have a rosy future to look forward to... just hope our future is rosier.

With Sorenson only being a sophomore, I would expect SUU to contend for the playoffs the next couple of years if he plays like he played Saturday.

Has he been that sharp all season, or was it steady improvement to get to that level?
