Okay folks...the B...Y...U game was almost two days ago, it is time to move on. I hope the team doesn't forget about that game and is able to learn a lot from it (as a fan it is going to hurt for a while). Just because people say your the best, doesn't mean you are the best. You gotta prove that everytime you step on the hardwood. That goes for practice, shoot arounds, and games. Gotta bring it all the time.
Anyway, SUU... Coach Reid seems to be getting a lot more from his T-Birds this season than he has in the last couple. SUU is 4-4, but haven't been blown out in any games yet this season. They barely lost to USU at the Spectrum (65-62) and they have close losses to Troy (by 4) and Oral Roberts (by 6). SUU seems poised to make a turn around this season and could make some noise in the Summit League. Weber CANNOT take the T-Birds lightly. There isn't one player the Cats can zone in on to slow down or limit the offensive production of SUU. They have four players averaging 11 ppg. SUU is very balanced and runs their offense fairly efficiently. Defensively, they are playing a lot better than they have in the past couple of years. From what I can tell, I haven't watched them a lot, but they play a lot of different zones, but mostly, match up. Personally, I think Weber should run the 1-3-1. They have the personnel to run it, but...I'm sure we will continue to see a 2-3...which leaves our bigs out of position. Fulton, Tres, even Mahone aren't zone players. Since we are going to be seeing more 3 guard lineups...maybe the Wizard will institute a 3-2. Who knows...
Weber is hurting right now. The Cats are down two starters and are coming off their worst performance in nearly three years. I'm hoping the friendly confines of the Dee is helpful, but after the beating they just took, the fickle fans of Ogden probably won't be supporting the Cats much. I'm predicting a crowd of 5K. I'd love to see 7, but I doubt it is going to happen, even though it is a rivalry game.
Things the Cats need to do:
1. Weber needs to swing the ball more and get into their offense. They have been taking shots far too quickly. Trust the sets more.
2. The bigs have got to do a better job of recognizing the defense. If there is a double team, or if the angle isn't there, kick it out. Hell, isn't there a set play that has a guy on the perimeter ready to take a kickout?
3. Gotta increase the # of Assists per game.
4. Defensive toughness. Play defense with your feet and stay in front of your man. Weber is too quick! They need to do a better job of utilizing that speed on the defensive side of the ball. Three things the Cats need to do. Communicate better on defense, get their hands up, and fill the lanes.
5. Follow the ball and be physical. Rahe's teams have the reputation of being tough and physical, this team hasn't shown us that yet.
