Well, what can I say. I expected the mighty Thunderchickens to be a little better than they are showing. They got some good transfers into their program, a new coach with a years recruiting under his belt, and a seemingly renewed vigor. However, while scoring at a better clip, their D has been really bad at times and those times are usually when they are in a game. It has been taking opponents about 14 seconds to score on them, or at least get a shot up. At any rate, they may be a year or two from actually getting better.

That doesn't mean that this will be an easy game. We proved that there are no easy games against ISU. I expect SUU to come in all fired up to play. It would be good for us to curb their enthusiasm early and often. Lets hope that carries over from the NAU game. :coffee:

I do think SUU will be better in a few years, but if Weber treats this game like they did ISU, SUU can and will beat them. Need to come in with the same energy and drive they did against NAU.

Go Cats

SUU’s two bigs, Morgan and Aytes, are quality players. Their defense is horrible, and unless/until Simon makes a commitment to some kind of defensive identity for his program he can keep bringing in all the D-1 transfers he wants and they will still suck. Idaho State has scored 94 and 93 points in their last two meetings vs SUU. ISU is NOT the Golden State Warriors.

What was their guard play like? Do they have any outside shooters? Do they try to drive a lot? Tell us a little more about their game.

ISU’s guards picked em clean. Marin, Cohee and Better had 11 turnovers between them. McGee is a good shooter but he was underutilized Thursday.

Thanks, and good luck with NAU tonight. I don't think you will have a lot of trouble with them, as long as you are able to stop their guard penetration. :coffee:

#32 can shoot if left open. He is a lot like Stutzman in a lot of respects. :thumb:

Chris Bowling — ISU tried to recruit him.

Old runner, do you have a man crush on Stutzman? A quick search shows you mentioned him when he was just out of high school, after his mission, then you mentioned him in the spring when his wife got really sick and he transferred for her sake, and last week, and now. Kind of creepin....just sayin..u think he's cute or somethin?

Are you actually going to leave this post up this time shoebox? A quick search would show you that Bengal Visitor a bengal insider is the one that has posted thd info on Stutzman in the past noy Olds. But what in the hell does this have to do with SUU. By the way SATOG is especially annoying tonight.

We didn't play as well tonight as we did Thursday, But we held together and got the win. Our three point shooting was not good for most of the night and our guards couldn't hit their FTs. Seemed like far too many TOs as well.

This Wildcat team is far from peaking. Hopefully, that can happen in March. :coffee:

I want to echo Tal's post from after the NAU game -- Nelson has really come on strong. Weber needed someone to provide some quality minutes off the bench at the 1 and 2 spots. Nelson has stepped up to be that person. The combo of Nelson and Harding may be the quickest 1 - 2 combo Weber has ever had.

Love Doc's pass first mentality -- and then he'll suddenly go off. I think he had been scoreless for quite awhile last night and then in a two to three minutes stretch went off for a layup a three and a two and one on a drive -- 8 points just like that. Fun to watch the speed those two have and the little trouble they have with any press because of it.

We are just seeing the tip of the iceberg with Ary-Turner and Court as well. With the addition of Barnes coming in next year, we will have a solid group of guards for quite a while. I really like the direction of this program. If this team can reach some sort of peak in late February and March, look out. :coffee:

People mention Israel Barnes as a guard coming in, but don't forget about the other two guys coming into the program next year--the two mission kids--Spencer Johnson (could play 1,2,3 positions) and Tim Fuller (a 3/4). It's easy to forget someone when they've been gone for two years, but one or both could both be sleepers for the program. With six guards, it will be a real guard competition next year for playing time. Harding is the man and Doc is coming on strong, but what will it look like in 2018-19? In Rahe's current system, three guards average 25+ mins/game, and two other guards average 13+ mins/game. With Baker (26 mins/game) and Richardson (30 mins/game) leaving at the end of this season, that opens two spots for guys to earn those minutes. Mission kids don't typically come back ready to tear up the court, but a few have. McKay Cannon did a pretty good job of it the year he came home from his mission. Eric Mika did at BYU after his mission. TJ Haws at BYU also did after his. Sorry to bring up BYU, but since Weber is not used to having mission kids, those were the comparisons I could find who came back to decent success after a mission. Johnson and Fuller could be awesome additions, don't forget 'em.

Good win. Don't let it go to our heads.. We are not good right now, but we are getting better. There is the possibility that we can reach competative greatness by March if we stay humble and hungry.

You are absolutely right, Dee. Sometimes missionaries can return ready to go. I hope that those two do come back in shape and raring to go. That would make us even deeper.

The other unknown is how Cody John will return from his injury. The injury he had to his back scares me a little bit. He is still here and going to school. He attends practice, but does not participate. I do know that the coaches really want him to get his degree, so I'm sure that he will do that if he can play or not.

The other thing, that none of us can predict, is if there will be any transfers at the end of the season. If there are any such transfers, we would be bringing in more players. There haven't been many years when everyone returned. :coffee:

Im starting to see the freshmen beginning to mesh a little better and are getting more comfortable. These last two games were polar opposites to the ISU game, the team is starting to play better together.

The part of the puzzle that isn't completely fitting right now is Chapman, the guy is in a major slump and hasn't performed like I think we all expected him to. At this point Im really hoping its a slump that he will eventually shrug off and not a case of jimmybarnesitis.

Agreed on all counts. Saturday was encouraging, not just because we saw Harding and Braxton go off, but because of everything that enabled it. Unselfish play with lots of guys making the extra pass to find an open man. Gone are the days of sloppy, out-of-control stuff, where guards are trying too hard to make Sports Center's Top 10 (i.e. Wheelwright and Gittens). There are things that need to be worked on, though. I love Kozak's aggressiveness and hustle, but he needs to continue polishing his offensive game. I don't know what the hell is going on with Chapman. He looked awful in all facets of the game. It wasn't just poor shooting.
