targeting

In the Boise State vs New Mexico game a player was called for targeting and ejected. The victim of the penalty is also out of the game with a possible concussion.
I would like to see the player called for the penalty sit out until the victim recovers. That could be one game, several games or even the season. Is this extreme? Sure would send a message that dirty play is not acceptable.

I'd give you 50% agreement on this. If there is a blatant foul that causes an injury, the penalty could be more than a half game. The one last night was really bad. The one on Nic Edwards in Pullman a few years back is another that was just awful.

But the flip side to this is the sheer volume of targeting penalties that are a complete judgment calls by the ref and are more of a speed-of-game issue than an intentional foul. I find myself arguing with the TV on about every other targeting ejection, think "what the hell was the kid supposed to do? Not hit him?"

I wish the refs would use far more leniency on ejecting players that clearly had no intent and reserve the ejection- or ejection + additional punishment- for truly flagrant and violent penalties.
