TCU to Big East

the Rat

Multiple reports this morning that TCU will join Big East for 2012/13 season. http://ncaafootball.fanhouse.com/2010/11/29/tcu-accepts-offer-from-big-east/

I think Utah State is the MWC's newest target. They really want to keep the Salt Lake market. Wouldn't be surprised if they go after Houston and UTEP as well to regain the Texas market and make it 12. I have no doubt that if any other WAC teams leave LA Tech will bolt to the first conference that says they are interested. As much as Tech hates the Sun Belt, they may have to make nice soon. WAC would be all but dead. SJSU, Idaho, Denver and NMSU would all have to scramble to find new conferences, Texas State and UTSA will have to either start batting their eyes towards the Belt or go home to the Southland with their tails between their legs. Denver and NMSU may be able to go back to the Belt, but I think SJSU and Idaho would be hosed. They would have to go independent or FCS if they were to keep football. Hello Sky?

I wonder if the now desperate WAC, having been spurned by Montana and Davis before, will offer again with Sac State and Montana State as incentives? I have no reason to think this is actually being considered, only a theory should the conference be facing the prospect of dissolving. I still think we would say no, but should they also offer Poly and Portland State, I begin to think we consider a move.

SJ Hornet, IMO you are spot on. The MWC will make a fast move on USU, for all the reasons you stated. Unlike the WAC, the MWC will not be complacent in replacing a defection. The folks over on the SJSU site are understandably concerned. http://spartanblitz.com/index.php?/forum/7-spartan-stadium-san-jose-state-spartan-football/

For all the heat Commissioner Benson has been under lately, I have to give him credit for manning up. He took the time and returned my email and brought me up to date on the WAC. I asked him about the possibility of adding UC Davis, Cal Poly or Sac State and he said that he's tried several times but they are committed to staying at the FCS level for the next 4 or 5 years. Finding another California school for the WAC has been at the top of his list, but there aren't any left in the running. San Diego State has found success in the MWC, FresNO State is waiting to make the jump and the others mentioned above are happy in the Big Sky, for now. I like others have bemoaned Benson, but I'll give him credit for returning my email. *Our own AD hasn't even done that much.

I would say we are more committed now than say six months ago, before your "up and coming" conference became Wannabe A Conference.

Interesting ! After Fresno and Nevada left the WAC became a buyers market and nobody is buying. I never bought the argument that it was go FBS now or never. I think that at some point within the next 10 years Sac, davis, Poly, Montana along with other Big Sky schools will go FBS. I don't know if they will go together as some sort revamped FBS Big Sky or to existing FBS leagues. No Big Sky schools are currently positioned to go FBS without sacrifices, all have issues. Poly and davis would need stadium expansion, Montana, Portland State etc need to add sports and we would need to rent Arco for basketball. Given a 5 year time frame to address these issues will help the schools make a smoother and more successful transition. I see the MWC taking Utah State and Hawaii, leaving San Jose, Idaho and New Mexico to fend for themselves. Idaho, a former Big Sky school might see the writing on the wall and rejoin the Big Sky for 5 years or so before moving back to FBS. I doubt that San Jose would be willing to swallow their pride and go FCS and don't see them having success going independent. Spartan football may be on the way out. All things considered there are far worse places for our football team to be right now than the Big Sky Conference!

GL: If we take UNM, I would think that it would also make sense to take NMSU as a ready-made travel partner. Other than that, the rest of what you said has the feel of truth to it.

I meant to say New Mexico State not UNM. I don't see New Mexico giving up their spot in the MWC for the BSC.

I should have caught that, too, given that one of my UOP teammates took UNM to the Insight.com Bowl after UOP unjustly fired us.

I agree with you about UNM dropping to the Sky. It would be nice, though. Perhaps they'll just have NMSU partner with SUU or NAU. Given the presence of UND, a NAU-NMSU pairing might make more sense.

The current FBS schools left with no home will probably try life as an independent before they pull the plug on their football programs. They will never consider FCS football.

On the NMSU board some fans seemed OK with FCS as a option and I think Idaho when hard pressed might look toward the BSC too. I doubt that San Jose could ever bring itself to go FCS even though it may the only realistic way for them to save football at this point. In the 80s I had relatives that lived in Stockton and were big UOP fans. It became obvious that UOP could not afford to compete at the D1 level in football any longer. There was talk at that time of UOP joining Sac, davis and Poly in D2 football while keeping all their other programs D1. Some of the high roller supporters in Stockton wouldn't hear of it and that decision eventually cost them their program. I see the same situation at San Jose, time for them to swallow their pride, face reality and make it work for them.

Interesting. At least some of their fans realize a football program is better than no football program regardless if it’s FBS or FCS.

Unfortunately, very very true. Many Spartans would rather cut off their nose despite their face when it comes to the football program. To many its either beg for an invite to the Mountain West or nothing. Even Independence is frowned upon. It just seems so friggin ridiculous to me. In the end they will be sitting at home watching someone else's school play on Saturday rather than watching theirs in the FCS.

Agreed, SJSU fans will be able to look back in the memory books, Bill Walsh, Dick Vemeil... and say "remember when" The AD is addressing the fans Friday, and has solicited questions. I like this one....

5. Will you please schedule more desirable foes for our Homecoming games in the future? UC Davis for homecoming...no thank's.
Hmm.. Humbolt?

In the meantime, Big West needs to give Sac St the same offer they gave UCD, and Poly, and make a similar offer to SJSU, Big Sky should throw an offer as well to SJSU. Spartys pride will not ask, but they can always respectfully refuse.

Sure would make for a competitive 4 some in Central /NorCal, and they would HAVE to play Davis again!
