Just read Bodnars (womens soccer coach) message. If this is a cost cutting move by Hickey for a few months salary this really sucks. We are no closer to a new heads women's coach for hoops. This process is taking way to long.
To my knowledge Bodnar was a very well respected coach in the area so this does not look good regardless.
Sadly a couple things come to mind....dropping Soccer and something else in order to save money or football. Or he wanted a pay raise or he would walk...giving hickey no other option because of financial constraints.

Can we just fast forward to fall....like NOW??

WHAT THE FUCK?

Seriously, how did he get terminated? He was BY FAR the best soccer coach Eastern ever had, and probably the best coach of women's sports at the whole university. All of the other women's sports are a complete shambles, he was the one beacon of success on the entire women's side of the athletic department.

What kind of measure could have been used to gauge that he wasn't good enough? Worse yet, he had a ton of young talent... guess what, welcome to the transfer portal, ladies. This is an appalling act of bad decision-making by our AD.

The only thing I can think of is if he was involved in some kind of HR nonsense (and I doubt it, he was very well respected), or as mentioned above, he knew he was being paid far less than the market rate for his level of achievement. Anything else, and this is just stupid. He was a winner, and he built a perpetually good program from the trash heap that was women's soccer at Eastern before he arrived.

One of the best coaches ever at EWU. Took a crappy team, came in and cleaned house and BAM they won,and won and won.
“Not sure why or how I wasn’t given a renewal for my contract and no explanation given but that’s up to the higher ups,” he tweeted. “We’ve won 3 championships and been in 3 of 5 finals and 2 ncaa tournaments. We had a 3.6 gpa or above and graduate our players. …” But I appreciate all of my time at EWU. We used to have a close family of coaches and a close community and times have changed obviously …that last sentence says alot,
*Can you hear it?????

Jim Allen our ally at the Spokesman-review wrote this, thx Jim
I thought the coach had their assistants back, the AD had the coaches back and the President had the AD's back. Plus fellow coaches had each others back. Feels lke thats' not going on at EWU anymore. Feels like we are playing scared.
Well looks like one of Bodnars assistants was taken away(covid related?) leaving him as the only coach in BSC with one assistant(they all have 2-3). Imagine he didn't like that(for him or his assistant) and he admits he can be outspoken. Players whine and parents whine when it comes to playing time, I don't know if that was a thing or not...shouldn't matter.
Bodnar had a wide network for recruiting with barebones recruity funds as do all EWU coaches when compared to other BSC teams. Kiss this program goodbye.

I'm still jolted over the fact he was terminated. If it was an HR thing, why on Earth would he not be explained the reason when he was being terminated? It almost doesn't sound possible that the AD would fire him without any explanation at all. And frankly, if she did fire him without even commenting on why, that would be alarming. But I guess it is par for the course with an Interim President who refuses to make any public statements about athletics. It's like these people live in some World where they operate in a vacuum.

That's my big beef with what's going on at Eastern (at all levels). Good leaders are open, communicative, and transparent. Leaders outline their goals and expectations. Everything involving Eastern athletics right now seems secretive, ambiguous, and unspoken. It's the exact opposite of good leadership. And these people want us to donate money to them? Donate to what, exactly? No one knows what the Hell you people are doing.

Scratched my post because it came across negative and want to direct my thoughts in positive lights. So even though the soccer program had 9 starters back and 23 total returners in their 1st game with new coach they surrendered 3 goals the first 15 minutes vs Gonzaga (EWU has never done that before). The EWU volleyball team in their 1st match fought hard article said....losing to Central.

*soccer team lost 1-0 today to a very good Ark, St. team...that's good....still got outshot though 16-3

I saw that as well. If you're going to replace a coach without a good reason, you better make sure you're improving the situation. The new coach inherited a pretty good squad, but hasn't won yet. They've got 8 days to get everything sorted out, because an 0-3 start would be a serious hole to dig out of.

The problem with Eastern's soccer team is sort of a carry-over from last year. They just don't pose enough of an offensive threat to keep teams honest. So they get pressed relentlessly knowing they will struggle to break it.

As for volleyball... holy crap. This used to be a proud program. National rankings, conference titles... It's slipped into the abyss. The current staff really hasn't put a competitive team on the floor yet. Losing to Central is just embarrassing.

Just revisiting this, but after several successful seasons in a row, the soccer team was blown out again today and sit at 2-6. The only two wins came against CSU-Bakersfield and St Thomas... one of those programs is on the periphery of also-ran West Coast programs, and the other is someone I've never even heard of.

For the sake of the program, I hope the ladies turn it around and salvage something from this season. It makes firing a coach who'd been successful mindboggling. We certainly didn't take a step forward.

This is what is going on now...Play a little" Ring around the Rosey" we all fall down and then eat doughnuts.
Besides the two nobody's they won they have scored zero goals in 6 games.
Been watching this program forever and want them to succeed more than anybody, they have 9 starters back(22 total) they are underperforming.
