I was actually really excited to see "Joker and the Thief" in action. Since I am new to Weber State Basketball, I haven't seen it in action. I've read about it in posts. People ranting and raving about how we used to play it all the time and now it isn't played at all during the games. I've read many posts about people "Beating a dead horse" over the song. I thought I was really in a for a treat tonight when my friend stood up, hit me to stand up, and said "This is it." I was expecting to be blown away. What I got was a huge let down. Maybe it was because everyone talked it up too much like seeing a great movie. But my experience was not a great one. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything to brag about or at least complain in forums that I was missing.
My experience was that 75% of the people around me slowly got to their feet. They must all know that the intro part of the song is WAY too long. By the time it gets to a part where I could actually clap, it was almost time to start the game again. (I do have to admit, the clapping part is fun. They should just do that.) The singing starts with is OK because people are clapping but it pretty bad otherwise. Then it ends.
Everyone tried to tell me that it "Really gets the crowd going." Yes, people clapped for that section of the song but other than that, I really didn't see any more of an increase than other songs played. The crowd definitively reacted better to songs played at the last men's game. At least then, they got up, danced, jumped around, yelled, chanted, and clapped. I just didn't see the same reaction from Joker and the Thief. I know a lot of people care dearly for this song. I was just hoping for the same experience and didn't get it. Maybe next time.
