The Big Sky is Bad

Montana State is getting blooooown out in the first round. I am disappointed that our conference is so un-competitive. When was the last time a big sky school won a game in the NCAA? Am I asking too much for a Big Sky School to put forward a winner?

I miss Ron Abegglen as a coach. Given a choice I'd rather have a coach who can maximize the talent he/she has vs recruiting great talent but being unable get the full potential. I remember the Weber vs North Carolina and Michigan State upsets in the 90s. Both of those NCAA first round winning squads barely missed the Sweet 16. I think there are still clips of both games still on YouTube. Makes me sad to think that was 20 plus years ago. That may have been the last time the Big Sky won a NCAA tournament game.

The last time the Big Sky won a game in the tournament was 2006 when Montana beat Nevada. Yep, it has been 16 years since anyone in the Big Sky has done anything worth note, which makes me sad. Weber has no aspirations to move on either.

I feel bad for posting this and I don't know how to take it down. I mean no disrespect to the bobcats who had a great season. I just want the conference to be better.

They got spanked, but the conference is improving and I think the future looks very bright. MSU ran into a buzz saw this morning, but overall I think the conference has a bright future. It was obvious that Bello was hurt. I have to admit, I’m not excited about the future of Montana or Weber State, but I see MSU, SUU and UNC making some interesting moves. I think they have coaches on the rise! The next three years are going to be interesting…….. where would’ve Weber been this year without the transfer portal and a Covid year? Can we build a team with 4 year players? Freshman class hasn’t really made an impact in a long time. Maybe since Harding…..Also not crazy about our ability to develop players. What makes the Richmond's and St. Peter’s competitive? I think it’s Coaches that have a plan and the ability to execute that plan. It took Sprinkle 2 years to make the BSC finals and 3 to win it. Weber with the best facility in the BSC and a roster with unbelievable talent couldn’t t make it out of the first round of the BSC tourney. The last time we were in the dance was against Xavier. I thought the guys fought hard……. Definitely better than MSU did today, but I’m bullish on the conferences future. The level of talent is improving.

Go look at the history of the Big Sky in the tourney. Lots of beat downs and low seeds. MSU drew probably the strongest 3 seed. But I would not base the strength of the conference on this one game. Good for the Bobcats and Danny Sprinkle, they had a good season and played a strong Texas Tech team and got drilled. The St Peters upset of UK reminded me alot of how we upset UNC in 1999. The energy early and maintaining poise down the stretch. If the low seed gets down early it can get ugly.

The conference isn't doing anything to improve basketball. Neutral court tournament is a bad idea. It has taken away competitive conference basketball. The games in January and February don't matter. Refs are terrible. It almost seems like the refs think the fans are at the games to watch them and not the players. I watched 5 games over the weekend and not one of them had more than 20 total FTs for both teams in the game. There are times that a team shots 20 in a half in the Big Sky. Ugh!!

I agree on the refs, but disagree on he neutral site for the tourney. I look at all these other conferences and the good teams are also good in January and February. Don’t let Weber’s habitual late season swoon color your view of competitive basketball. Our coach just needs to learn that champions aren’t made in November and December. MSU won the conference and tourney……… it was still competitive. Weber had a great start to the season, ran out of gas in January/ February. The complaints about the neutral site is noted, but maybe it’s time to figure out how to compete in the tourney…. Versus wanting to go back to the good old days? No doubt……. BSC refs are the worse!
