The Easterner's football coverage

Hello all, my name is Peter Sowards and I am a sports reporter for The Easterner, EWU's student newspaper. I've been covering the Eagles football team this year and have written numerous articles, including game recaps, previews, and player/coach profiles. I love checking on this board every now and then for story ideas and getting a pulse on the fanbase.

Here is a link to all the articles I've written so far this year:

The majority are on football but I have written a men's basketball preview and profile on Kevin Winford as well.

I'm at practices doing interviews every Wednesday and live tweet the games from the press box (at home games) as well. Be sure to follow my twitter account (@EasternerSports) for tweets during the game as well as links to stories, quotes from players, and ticket information.

Here's a link to my most recent article, a profile on Beau Baldwin in which I spoke with three players (Evan Cook, Nicholas Edwards, Jeff Minnerly), four coaches (Zak Hill, John Graham, Ryan Sawyer, Aaron Best), athletic director Bill Chaves and sports information director David Cook.

Would love to answer any questions you guys have! Go Eags!

Great Job on the article Peter. This is not your average college sports experience, few student bodies get to participate in what is happening on this campus, with football. I hope you and the staff of the Easterner can get that across to the students.
Is the paper sponsoring some type of ESPN sign contest for Saturday?

Thanks! and I don't believe so.

Peter,

what is your opinion regarding student enthusiasm for the football program? I graduated in 2009 and always felt that either the students didn't care about us, or actually harbored ill feelings for the team. Has this changed?

Thanks!

FormerEag: I came into school in 2009. There was definitely an air of resentment toward the team towards that time. I didn't understand why. However, the support from the students has definitely changed. I have not heard a negative jab toward our football team the entire year.

I also came in 2009 and the difference between then and now is night and day! My first home game was a home loss to Weber State. I remember going up to tailgate and being pretty bummed out to see how boring it was. I was used to going to Montana games in Missoula and it being a really good time. In 2010, it was much better, 2011 better yet, and this year, outstanding! Students are excited for games and the student attendance is about 5 times what it was 3-4 years ago. Winning brings that "swag" attitude and I think that it's alive and thriving at EWU! :thumb:

I can't speak with a ton of veracity as to how the excitement used to be (this school year is just my second at EWU, I'm a transfer student), but I can tell you that the excitement THIS YEAR is very high. There's a 'buzz' around campus, and take just one look at the social media of students and a ton of them are always talking about the Eagles' football team.

This Saturday's game vs. Sam Houston St. will be interesting--school is "out," but it's the biggest game of the frickin' year! I hope the students can wait a few extra days before heading home.

And thank you to all those who are reading!! It is much appreciated.
