Now that we have a team worth getting excited about, how can we improve the fan base and take a step forward this season? It's not just the number of fans, but how loud they are.

You and I both know that a good fan base starts with students. You need a large, loud, and charged student section. An animated student section is essential for the ultimate "college atmosphere," and that atmosphere in turn, helps to generate more interest in the community. A few years back I caught a game in the Spectrum and an older guy told me that he loved watching the USU students get into the game. He thought that was almost as much fun as watching the games. It is to bad that the university didn't make the Purple Pak a priority and hasn't done much to resurrect it. There is a reason why Utah has the MUSS and USU has the Hurd...they recognize that the limited investment in a student organization will pay dividends in the future. Also, they realize that a strong student section will also help bring in more fans and help their athletic programs succeed. Most importantly, these are students who are automatically, from day one, committing to their university. Being a part of a group like this is creating a loyal fan base who will attend home games, travel with the team, and recruit for more members. These are students who are going to be life-long supporters. These are future season ticket holders, boosters, and university supporters. To me, the university needs to realize that this is a key to growing a fan base, building donations, and probably a mechanism at retaining current students and turning them into life long supporters. Isn't that the goal?

Jerry should take the initiative and take over this group from alumni. He has the most to gain immediately by creating such a group. Alumni just isn't efficient enough to take this project on. I like to ask people on campus...why is Alan Hall so committed to Weber State? It is because he got involved while a student.

Not choosing to not go to a game because you don't believe the opponent is worth it is a good start.

More night games, Attendance is usually higher when games are played later in the day. It doesn't start getting really cold in Northern Utah till November so this is a possible thing to do.

Like Tal said, Students. They are important.

A lot of the "season ticket holders" will disagree with me on this one, but do more game promotions. If it means getting 4 tickets with your America first card that is fine. There are a lot of on the bubble "fans" that are more willing to show up if they can also get something out of it. And if they like the experience they are going to be more willing to come back and actually pay for a ticket for the next game.

Televise all the games, not just the home games. Get the brand out there. Make it visual.

And the biggest factor in getting fans to come to games..........WINNING. Providing a good product, one that participates in the playoffs yearly and wins a Big Sky title every so often. Give the fans a reason to look forward to Weber State football by becoming a better football school.

I agree that it would be nice to have a loud, active student section but the makeup of WSU's student body doesn't lend to big student sections the same way BYU, USU, or Utah does.

That being said, winning seasons and exciting games would pack the stadium week after week. I'll be at the Montana Western game with my family even though I would like a better opening game opponent.

I agree. I am a season ticket holder now, because I was actively engaged in attending games while a student.

Student life at Weber has never been ideal, but it has really suffered in the last 20 years. No real student involvement at games or otherwise. Fraternities and Sororities used to attend all the games and provided a nice base of fans in the student section, they mostly no longer exist. The residence halls and other student groups need to be cultivated for the next generation of fans. The Athletic department and Student Life need to work together on this.

This is relative. I been to a number of Westlake High School games in September and October where the temperature at the start of the game was in the high 80's and 90's, and by the start of the fourth quarter it was in the low 50's. Although not "really cold," it is a large temperature adjustment in a short span that a lot of casual fans don't want to deal with.

It actually worked out really well for us this year as 3 of our 5 home games are night games.

Montana Western - 6pm
UC Davis - 5pm
Southern Utah - 6pm

Our next home game vs the Griz is the last weekend of October so right about the time the early games should start.

Another huge bonus this year is that NONE of our home games conflict with any of the opening weekend hunts, for we have a bye on the opening elk and are on the road for opening deer. And yes, people do still hunt. This guy is one of them.
