The Future Looks Bright

It amazes me how young this team really is. With Talley and Vernon on offense (yes I know there are more, but don't have the time to do the breakdown on defense and offense) we should be set up for years to come. Let's hope we can keep our coach happy "$$$".

I agree, but we also have to be realistic. Paying a coach above $200k just isn't very reasonable at Eastern. Nor is having a bunch of 6-figure assistants. I really, really like Coach Baldwin, but there will be a gtime in the not-too-distant future when someone swoops in with a big wad of dough and takes him. And I'd hope he'd get a great new job and be totally successful.

I totally agree with going after the money and a situation that will work. I just hope the ties he (wife has) has to this area keep him around for at the very least 5 more years. PAY THE MAN!!

Agreed at the "skill positions we look good. There are a number of dynamic athletic kids that are red shirting this year. As far as Adams, think about his development this year already. His first start was @ Weber and he only played about 1/2 of the game. He played the entire game in Bozeman then Baldwin went back to the 2 QB system up until the Cal Poly game where he did a very good job. He has really grown as a freshman QB.

I'm a little worried about losing the "big 3" (Edwards, Kaufman, Herd) and what that'll do in terms of offensive production next season. Maybe Kaufman doesn't come out early, but it also wouldn't surprise me if he did if his draft stock is solid. Kaufman has won so many big games for us, including the NC it'd be awesome if he stayed for his Senior season.

We'll still have a lot of talent at receiver, although not as much size. Our offense has been defined by big receivers for the past few years. But I'm also excited about guys like Shaq Hill, Cooper Kupp as well as guys that have been playing for a while like Clark and Mitchell. Maybe Huddleston at 6'6 can be the next Brandon Kaufman, who knows.

As far a Coach goes, I think he is fairly content and has mentioned in the past that he has "big plans" for EWU. I think building a dynasty in the Pacific Northwest has got to be apealling and I'd be surprised to see him jump at something like the Idaho job. I think it'd take a MWC/Pac-12 job with big money to lure him away. I do agree that him and his staff need to be paid more, but I think that's tied into generating more revenue as the program continues to grow. It'll take some time, but things like Gateway will go a long ways to that end. I hope Baldwin will be here for a long time, he's a special kind of coach and the players love playing for him.

Kaufman won't leave this year. The market for receivers that rely on size instead of speed isn't going to push him into the top 3-4 rounds. The general rule of thumb is that if you're not in the first 3-4 rounds, the money is better if you wait. The only caveat is if you think you've peaked in terms of your collegiate value, and I don't think that's the case for Kaufman. If anything, he'll be more of a focal point next year.

We GOT to pay our assistant coaches more! They are making less than a living wage, put in hellacious hours and doing a great job!

On the topic of young players, it was nice to see Cody Hecker in the game on Saturday and on the defensive side of the ball, the future looks bright with players like Jordan Tonani and Shaquille Hill.

I mentioned that to GATW about Hecker... glad to see him get some playing time. Shaq is a WR though. Tonani and Zamora are gonna to be a couple of AAs for us though on the defensive side of the ball. I forget, is Zamora a safety or CB?

I believe they are looking at moving Zamora to LB and putting on a few more pounds.

Have they changed Hill over? He's listed as a DB on the roster. At any rate, lots of young talent to watch.

Well he was originally at WR, then they switched him to DB, then back to WR. He's gotten some snaps, although minimal, at WR so far this year. Lots of talent though, that's for sure. We've had some impressive recruiting classes lately. Reaping the benefits of a NC.

Shaq was playing receiver during fall camp although I'm not sure what the long-term plan is for him. He's definitely already making a big impact on special teams with the big on-side recovery against Montana and te kickoff return TD against North Dakota. I've also seen him in on a bunch of tackles on special teams as well. Dude definitely has some wheels. I could see him playing In the slot or at CB. We got a ton of talented players in the '11 and '12 signing classes. A few of them are going to be big time players in the Big Sky.

Another thing is that our offensive line is going to be big and dominant in the coming years. We signed some really tall and athletic tackles and some huge guards. At tackle I think Debord and Curtis are future all-Conference type players for us on the O-Line. Boatright will be solid too once he gets some more PT.

I was nervously excited about the recruiting because I know how far behind they got with the run to the NC. I think with all the buzz with the turf, ranking, scoreboard, (tailgating for adults) and Gateway project even over here on the west side people are really noticing plus . . .unfortunately with the circus in town in Pullman . . .athletes will be more into coming here to stay closer to home and winning rather than being a middle of the pack team (UW) or being a side act in the "PIRATES" circus.

The truth is we're not typically going head-to-head on kids with Washington State or UW anyway. If anything, it's more a full-ride vs. walk-on or partial decision between kids with mutual interest. Our biggest battles are with the local FCS schools, especially Portland State and Montana who routinely come into Washington, and the Idaho Shitstains. Beyond those teams, we seem to butt heads against teams like Colorado State and Wyoming from time-to-time, and believe it or not, the service academies.
