After a day of recovery, there were definitely some bright spots. The first is Quincy and the O-Line. That was absolutely impressive and goes without saying. The D-Line actually played pretty well in my opinion. Not perfect but they did have moments of complete domination. And Samson was a man among boys. I don't think NAU's O-Line is the best we'll see but they certainly aren't bad so kudos to our guys for continuing to make strides. Linebackers played well too. It's hard to tell for sure exactly how they played on TV but Hamlin was around the ball a lot and made some big hits and big plays. Cody stuffed the middle on several occasions, as good MLB's do. Not counting the last drive, I think the secondary played good enough to win. The good news is our defense definitely is improving.

After the game, I thought JW was the worse QB we have had in a long, long time. Then I got to recover and look at the glass half full. What I liked was that I saw times where he was exhibiting some leadership and taking command. For example, when Butorac didn't snap the ball and we got a delay of game, you could see JW get pissed when he didn't snap it. Although his play didn't necessarily look all that stellar, it was his third start and NAU had two games of film on him. SUU had to guess what they were going to see and UNC only had one game to look at. I suspect he grew up a lot in that game and even though he appeared to struggle, it didn't look like he hung his head. Rather, it looked like he kept battling. The quality of the guys around him and the good coaching leads me to believe they picked him up after the game and he'll be better for it. I look for him to rebound big time against UND.

Yes, we lost and that stings, but we're getting better and better in areas where we typically struggle, which could really come in handy for a deep playoff run.

Oh yeah, the spanking UM received certainly helped take some sting out of our loss. There superior defense they have been touting gave up 421 on the ground.

56n92, I concur with most of your observations. I do question when you said " What I liked was that I saw times where he was exhibiting some leadership and taking command. For example, when Butorac didn't snap the ball and we got a delay of game, you could see JW get pissed when he didn't snap it."
I'm watching the replay and just saw that particular play. It was the play before West fumbled the ball on the 2 with 6:30 left in the game. Not sure you need to get pissed at your center after that or anytime when Butorac has proven himself to be a leader on the O-Line and has paid his dues, that doesn't show me leadership. Perhaps West could have called a timeout and saved that down then addressed Butorac (noticed he told West he couldn't hear).

Yep, I think he got caught up in the heat of the moment there. But you can't let emotion get the best of you. Butorac obviously couldn't hear the count. The end of that game was truly a perfect storm for NAU. Still trying to figure out how we lost that game with the lead, the ball, and less than a minute left in the game. :ohno:

Aren't we all. Personally I am applying the 24 hour rule that this game is behind us and we move forward.
Go Eagles

Observer you totally missed my point. Not worth explaining because you obviously have an ax to grind. I was simply choosing to point out good things I saw rather than the negative shit you apparently can't let go of. Maybe you'll wake up in a better mood tomorrow. Seriously, you really read my post and went back to watch the video so you could quote specific game clock time and surrounding plays? Brad Paisley has a song about guys like you "look so much better on line."

And for the record I wasn't being critical of Butorac on that play.

Whoa. He just contributed to conversation. You need to cool it.

Getting pissed at your center doesn't show leadership at all. Maybe Booty should be pissed at West for not calling the snap count loud enough.

But leaders don't do that...

dozy,
#57 is playing his butt off. I told him on Thursday last week, I didn't know he was that fast, he smiled and hugged me and said he was moved on the DL. We lost a rough one Saturday, we now must regroup, and play the way we know they are capable of playing. My youngest son Jeff is now on your side of the mountain, he lives in Bonnie Lake, he is the #2 Pastor there, he moved from Moses Lake. Here is hoping we see most of you from the West Side, at Home Coming Saturday. Good Morning. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

SirGarethThe3rd,
Missed you at the Friday Night Madness,
The Women and Women BB Teams had a lot of fun. Big Jorg Stands above all. All the new Players are going to be great addition to hour team. I am going to the reception on Nov 10th at 5:30pm, and the Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Hope Coach take a Monday off. This will be in Lobby of Northern Quest, by Masslows (sp). I must say that both Women and Men had fun doing their thang:) There was a good turn out by students and none students. Every thing got finished about 9:30 p.m., got home and crashed. I know you are very busy now at UPS, the holidays are almost upon us. Take care. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

I don't think he has an ax to grind whatsoever, and I agree with his comments. I don't think it's right to get upset at your Center when you're playing inside a dome and he can't hear the snap count. Or at least, it's not ok to be so demonstrative about it. That's not leadership...and above all else, it's on the QB (Leader of the offense) to remain calm and keep a cool head, regardless of the situation and what's going on. When you're a leader, and you allow yourself to lose control in a stressful situation, it tends to have a trickle-down effect.

FWIW, I've also been critical of VA a couple times when he's visibly gotten upset at receivers for running the wrong route, or whatever.

With all that said, I think it's most likely that he's a young QB who let the emotion get the better of him in the moment. He'll learn from it, and I highly doubt there's any hard feelings on either end.

Before I move on to this weeks game (which I believe will bring out one can of whoop ass on poor ND) I want to convey my observations regarding title of thread.."The Good Things"
can-of-whoop-ass_o_413536.jpg

I watched the rerun on root yesterday even though I never do. Reason being is that I wanted, like many on here, to answer the question how did we lose that game. All during the game I was impressed with all three aspects that make up the big three that usually determine the result. Our Defense was playing the best I've seen(Zylstra (and all others on the d-line)was the one I think that was killing me..having a fun time tearing it up) but all members were ON!.I think was the Offense was clicking and making plays..O-Line and Forte playing best to date and Special Teams were doing that little extra that pay big dividends(kicker/punter were on as well as coverage units). I was wondering why we weren't smoking these guys. The series at the 7 min mark was important after that huge run to set up 1st and goal with a chance to get a two possession lead. settled for a fg...ok pts on board is good and still confident our "D" could slow them down and our "O" could score again if need be. A TD in that case coupled w/ mojo we would have had coulda blown this one open.
Been around so many games that get decided by who makes the "BIG" plays when it matters and EWU is more times than not on that side of the equation.

It's my conclusion that we played the best game of the year to date but simply came up short...it happens. I also believe we played a better all around game in all three phases vs NAU in the loss than we did in our wins vs SHSU,ISI and MSU in those wins. I'm not concerned about the rest of the season...especially if continued growth is on the menu and VA comes back with little rust. I'm excited to see just how good this team can be...huge upside still left!

Apologies for upsetting the apple cart. Perhaps my example was bad but I saw other instances where JW was trying to lead the charge. I was trying to say that he was in there battling and not hanging his head. Impossible for me to know what was going on in that particular situation (and in retrospect I would have been general and not specific) but I thought it was good that he was taking command (good in the long-term sense of his development). Good for him for challenging a very accomplished senior captain. That takes a pair. If he was blaming Butorac and not taking responsibility for something that was his fault, bad for him. I never meant to suggest any of that exchange was anyone's fault. The entire point of my original post was that I saw good things and I didn't intend for it to get off the tracks with that example. So to recap:
Running game was fantastic
O-Line played unbelievable
D-Line played well with moments of brilliance
LB's seemed to play well
Secondary played well enough to win
I believe in this loss our team grew and established things that will equal a deep playoff run. :thumb:

SirGarethThe3RD,
Missed a good Red/White Scrimmage last night. Seems like we have a bunch of three point shooters. Sure hope they get their "shooting license" before the season starts. ;) ;) ;) Kyle Reid seems to accrue a lot of fowls, or the Ref doesn't like him ;) ;) ;). Saw Quincy entering Reece Court for the scrimmage, congratulated him on his game against NAU and the 219 yards he ran for. He said, "thanks Vic", just watch me on Saturday. Does that mean he will attempt to run for 220 yards? :o :o :o Told him to stay healthy. Women BB Team have their Scrimmage tonight at 6 p.m. So after FB Practice will attend. Go Eagles!!!!!

To All,
It looks as if all of our injured were on the field practicing Tues and Wed. Todd Raynes did state he is ready to go. Love seeing him on the Special Teams, he looks like a "Patriot Missals" running down the field to make a tackle. Once he focuses on the ball handler, his butt is in trouble. Jalen Moore #28, was out practicing and running very hard. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: Good Morning. Must go and get the rest of my "ZZZZZZZs :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace
