Weber State takes to the road for the first time this season traveling to the tropical paradise known as the Bahamas. There Weber will play 3 games against other very competitive Mid-Major programs, starting with a familiar foe.

The Iona Gaels.

Last season in the Great Alaska Shootout the Iona Gaels powered to a 22 point win over Weber State in the 2nd round of the tournament. That same Iona team went on to win the Shootout beating Nevada in the Championship 75-73. Iona also went on to win the MAAC tournament and securing a spot in the NCAA's losing in the first round to #3 Oregon 93-77.

So far Iona is 0-2 on the season having lost 2 close matchups @ Albany and @ Syracuse.

Weber State will be heading in to the game with a little revenge in mind. Should be a solid test for this young team and a win would be a huge accomplishment. Should Weber beat Iona they will play the winner of the Northern Kentucky / James Madison winner. Should they lose Weber will play the loser of the aforementioned contest.

The tournament starts this Friday at 11 am (9 am for us Mountain Time folks) When Vermont and Bradley take to the court.

Day 1 Friday Nov 17th
11 am- Vermont vs Bradley
2 pm- Coastal Carolina vs Texas San Antonio
5 pm- Northern Kentucky vs James Madison
8 pm- Weber State vs Iona

Day 2 Saturday Nov 18th
11 am- Game one loser vs game two loser
2 pm- Game three loser vs game four loser
5 pm- game one winner vs game two winner
8 pm- game three winner vs game four winner

Day 3 Sunday Nov 19th
11 am- Game for seventh place
2 pm- Game for fifth place
5 pm- Game for third place
8 pm- Championship game

Thanks to the kind folks over at Ionahoops.com I found this gem. And one interesting little bit of info caught my eye.

Are There Any Non-Bracketed Games?
Six participants have scheduled home games against non-Division I opposition to serve as fourth games for this event. Iona and NKU are the exceptions.

Could explain why WCBC or Black Hills State is on our schedule, one of them may have been our non bracketed game in this tourney.

I paid the money to watch the tourney, Currently watching the Vermont/Bradley contest. Good sound and quality.

That doesn't make sense to me. Six of eight teams just consider exhibition games part of this tournament but that includes absolutely no recognition of it or actual inclusion in the tournament. What possible purpose would this serve?

Vermont picked to win tournament championship over Iona, Bradley picked 8th. I hope this first game match-up and result bodes well for Weber, picked 5th.

Not quite sure, this isn't the first I have heard of teams doing this. I believe Eastern or Sac did something similar last season, it may be more of incentive to join the tournament. Many tournaments actually do non bracketed games and this new tournament have have that feature, and all but Iona and Northern Kentucky took advantage of it.

Weber definitely has the size advantage, but Iona probably has more athleticism. There is a good chance that they could balance out and create a good game. Weber is gonna need to hit their wide open three's though, can't shoot a bunch of three's and only make 20 % of them.

Currently watching Texas SA and Coastal, neither team is looking all that sharp right now. Coastal up 7 26-19

this field is much better than i originally thought. there are 2-3 teams as good or better than a typical rahe weber team. so to go 2-1 would be very good. vermont, n.kentucky are both in the top 10 or so in the mid major. of course its too early for that poll to have any value but it at least says those are good programs.

iona have won back to back maac titles are are the preseason favorites so we might be playing the best team in the opening round.

iona received 9 out of 10 possible 1st places votes from their coaches.

i know many on here think the mid major is useless but it shows weber and iona with votes this week. und's coach is one of the voters.

From the box score, it looks like we did everything well except take care of the ball. We had 18 turn overs and that cost us the game. Still it was a good game against very good competition.

On to the next.

Didn't get to watch the game as I was at a grizzlies hockey game but it looked like we couldn't keep up with their speed. Very similar to last year except this year we only lost by 8

San Antonio foolishly fouls Bradley with .04 seconds left on an airball desperation 3 when they were up 69-68. Bradley ends up winning 71-69.

6 point lead at the half, not playing bad but our freshmen are showing their freshmeniness. Keep up the good free throw shooting and limit turnovers and we may have a chance.

Now, Im leaving for Stewart Stadium. GO WILDCATS!

1-2 on this trip. Not what I would prefer to see, but I guess it is the way things are for this team. Rahe has stated throughout the season how "young and inexperienced" the team is. I still can not figure out why we do not have Cannon and Gittens on this roster. Our guard play is good, but Zach and Kozack are really struggling. We maybe averaged 5 ppg from the bench this tourney. I am afraid for a loooooong year. our depth is going to be the death of us.
