The Numbers Don't Lie

Team statistics from Bigsky.com. Opponent 3rd down conversion at 47%. Opponent 4th down conversion at 72%. Opponents average 27 1st downs a game. Worst in conference. Tack on 65 penalty yards a game. 12th of 13 in total defense. -6 turnover margin good for 12th of 13.

Here's some historical perspective on just how bad our defense has become...

During the entire decade of the 80s, we gave up more than 50 points on 4 occasions. It happened 7 times during the 90s, including 3 in a row to close out the 1995 season. During the 2000s, it again happened 4 times.
That's a sum total of 15 games over 30 years where we surpassed the ugly 50 point barrier on D, or an average of once every two years.

In the last two seasons, the number is 8. No way to put a positive spin on that.

Isn't this happening everywhere?

I don't know about everywhere, but certainly in Bozeman.

I watched some of Coastal Carolina and Liberty last night.... I sure we wish we could mimic some of the things they do defensively.

Me too, but I'm not sure either one of those QB's would start for half the BSC schools.

even radio announcers are showing frustration with our piss poor defensive performance. Pathetic

The BSC site is down but I'm guessing the 4 teams heading to the playoffs were the 4 best defenses in the conference. They all had a stat or player that was near the top in national rankings.

I know that UND was around 7th in the nation in rush defense and held Poly to just 153 last night.

Montana's Tyrone Holmes was leading the nation in sacks,

PSU's Xavier Coleman was leading the nation in INT's with 9.

SUU's James Cowser this year became the all-time FCS leader in TFL.

SUU was leading the nation in turnover margin at +24.

Obviously not a coincidence.

PSU converts on 3rd and long to seal the deal, the story of the season. The coaches noted the past 2 years the wealth of talent and speed in the secondary. I would have liked to see an aggressive front 7 and 8 with man d in back. A bear front would have been fun to watch with our DBs on an island competing. I just did not see that QB beating us through the air yesterday. He kind of had a shot put throwing motion. I could be wrong but I would prefer to give up the occasional big play instead of marching down the field 6 yards a clip and wearing defense down.
