The State of Our Program

I think it says a lot about our program that we get swept by perennial doormat SacState plus lose to them AT HOME 2 yrs in a row and nobody seems to care. Even eternal optimist 1990 is beginning to "smell the roses"

It does say a lot. We have 0 away wins, have only cracked 70 points 4 times all season, and fold in the second half of games. We've been outscored by 150 points in second halves. I'm not ready to throw in the towel on Hayford, but something's going to have to change for me to believe we're on the right track.

Don't forget the age of the team. Promising players are freshman.
This bodes well for the program long term :D
I am not prepared to give up just yet.
Too many promising signs.

I actually like the makeup of our team. We go fairly deep into the bench and have a good mix of size, age, and athleticism. This isn't the type of team we had during the Mike Burns era. One great player (Stuckey) and almost nothing else. The problem in my opinion is strategy. We're in almost every game, but don't make much adjustment in the second half of games, while our opponents do. The Sac State game at home sticks out in my mind. We shot 52% in the first half, held the Hornets to 39%, and had a 10 point lead at the break. In the second half we only managed 8 FG, and were outscored by 17. This happens over and over again.

Regarding the Burns' years ... you are way off. Not only did we have Stuckey, but there was a ton of talent. Butorac, Kellen Williams, Beitinger, Bekkering, Brandon Moore, Penoncello, Deuce Smith ... that team should have won the league. (Not to mention that Burns chased off Matt Nelson, who ended up starting at Boise State.) Talent was never an issue in the Burns years ...that was all about lack of coaching. He was an amazing recruiter.

I would say we were close again two years ago ... if Dean would have returned, you would have had Dean, Colimon, Forbes, Winford, Ederaine, Laron Griffin and Tremayne. That team probably would have been a top three if Earlywine comes back to coach them.

And now we're back at square one. This team has one promising player (Jois) and bunch of role players. Unless Hayford has some talent coming in next year, we're staring at another long season next year... My guess is Hayford will have this team close to competitive by the end of his fifth year there, then the athletic dept. will lose its patience, fire him and then we'll start all over again...

It's the cycle of a losing program unfortunately...

We agree for the most part Jimboh. I don't see Hayford getting 5 years with performances like this year's, but I think he's got enough talent to win at least 1 road game or make the conference tournament. I'd give him another year, or maybe two if we're seeing real improvement. I don't remember the Burns era as fondly as you, but that's in the past. The present and future are more important.

I hate this offensive philosophy of focusing on shooting 3 pointers. We obviously do not have the personel for this offense and not many in all of college basketball do. Why not have an offense built on getting higher % shots. This NAU game is a prime example of why this offensive system DOES NOT WORK!

At least we won??
Parker Kelly played a great second half, Daniel Hill was solid all the way through and Tyler Harvey turned it all around. Forbes was incredible. This is going to be a great team. We also have Reuter, Jois and if Jorg can continue to work the ball we have a great future! Very young team but WOW, they don't give up!
Unbelievably proud of our players tonight.

Hayford has said his philosophy is about taking high percentage shots, yet we do just the opposite. He's also all about maximizing foul shots, yet we're among the last in the league there too. :ohno:

We are back!!!!!

Great win. I think we definitely make the tournament and have a chance at getting to Championship game.

Its good our players have more "never quit" attitude than I do. I was ready to turn the radio off and burn the rest of my season tickets at about the 5 min mark. WOW what an effort to come back.
Good Job Eagles!!!

Unbelievable win! Maybe this will jump start a good run for us to finish the season. I'm not ready to join 1990 on the championship game bandwagon, but it IS a hell of a comeback victory.
