There's no sense of urgency to make any decisions on future

"We are assuming we are a nine-team league in 2010 and then an eight-team league in 2011,'' Benson said of those football seasons. "There's no sense of urgency to make any decisions on future membership. The most important thing is to manage the legal separation of Fresno State and Nevada.''

Benson added that if Fresno State and Nevada were to leave before the 2011 season then the remaining six schools would be short two football games and doing that on short notice "would be almost impossible."

Benson said the league has time to decide what it will do and added that his phone has been ringing off the hook from members to join the remaining six schools for 2012 -- Hawaii, Utah State, Louisiana Tech, San Jose State, Idaho and New Mexico State.

The most interested schools are Texas-San Antonio and Texas State. Benson said the league has made multiple attempts to invite the Sun Belt's North Texas to no avail. Other schools that have been in contact such as Montana, Montana State, Sacramento State, Cal Poly and UC Davis would have to decide if they want to bump up their programs into the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Good to know we're at least confirmed as expressing interest!

No sense of urgency? Isnt that what he said a few weeks ago when expansion was tabled by the league until at least 2012?

This is what has gotten him into trouble recently, waiting. Do we really want to be part of an organization that has a leader who puts his head into the sand?

Oh wait, we have two of them already, nevermind.

Change the name to AAC, or Apathy Athletic Conundrum.

And we want to be a part of this conference, with this guy as the commissioner?

That $5M exit fee will not apply to any of the remaining six WAC members.

So, if the MWC expands to 12 teams, good bye Utah St.

Hawaii goes indy for football.

La Tech goes to the Sun Belt or CUSA?

New Mexico St. goes to Sun Belt?

What's left? San Jose St. and Idaho.

I say that we should stay put and see what develops before deciding what action to take. The Big Sky teams mentioned for the WAC are really in the best position. We currently have options and a secure conference to call home. Poly and davis are in a more desperate situation with the likely demise of the GWC. If the WAC is down to two I can see Idaho possibly going FCS and trying to get into the BSC, and San Jose if not willing to go FCS dropping football.

The WAC should just expand to 12 teams in 2012. If all teams want to make the jump it would solidify the conference. You'd have 2 Divisions and a Conference Championship Game in Hawaii or a Neutral site.

It would look like this.

West
Hawaii
San Jose st
Idaho
Sacramento St
Cal Poly
UC Davis

East
La Tech
New Mexico St
Utah St
Montana
Texas St
UT- San Antonio

This would Stablize the conference. You'd have 11 conference games and 1 out of conference game each year. Your allowed 12 games because Hawaii is in the conference. Sac st could still schedule Fresno st, Nevada or a Pac 10 school each year home or away. What are your thoughts?

I don't think in large conferences with two divisions members play all other schools each year. They play members of their own division then rotate with some schools from the other division. What would be the point of a championship game if everyone had already played each other?

I would prefer to cut La Tech, the two Texas schools and NM State and add to Montana State and maybe Portland State . As the membership drifts south and east I feel less connection and interest.

It looks like Benson is clueless. His sitting and waiting is exactly what got him in this position (again). I call BS on his “no sense of urgency” line. If he truly believes this then the WAC is done for.

This is all poker. I am sure Benson has invites out already to the schools he needs now.
I wouldn't expect the Sac State contingent to make it public until the day of the first game as a member.

What he is saying is that he can't firm up his league lineup until he knows for sure it wont get poached again. Why add the TX schools if La Tech leaves?

Laser: I agree with you about the TX schools, though I am intrigued at the prospect of playing CatMom. LOL.

I would beg to differ with you about cutting NMSU loose. THOSE Aggies have an historic connection to Left Coast schools that I wouldn't want to lose.

I suspect that if the teams fall out as you've suggested, we'd be looking at five division games, three or four cross-division games, and three or four OOC games, which we could do anything with. I'd suggest an FCS, a B(C)$ (we'd have easier access to the Pac-12), and maybe a mid-tier MWC school. Perhaps occasionally replace the FCS game with a MAC school. You are right about the cross-division scheduling, though. The conference would be shooting itself in the foot forcing a complete round-robin schedule that ignores the presence of the divisional breakdown; may as well have a 12-team league in one division, as unwieldy as that would be.

Huh? SH you are making my head hurt. :D

Then that would make the conference I outlined even better. You'd probably have 8 - 10 conference games and a home and home series against Fresno st and Nevada and can also still have another out of conference team on the schedule.
