I would argue ours is just as tough.

We both play UNI, they get them at home, us on the road.
We both play in Missoula
We both play ISU, they get them at home, us on the road
We both play MSU, we get them at home, they do on the road

We both have PAC 12 games, they play ASU, we play Oregon

Pretty similar except they come to Cheney this year.

Thats what I was thinking too. In fact it could be argued ours is a little tougher, but details details.

Cal Poly plays #5 ranked EWU, Montana and Montana State all on the road.
EWU plays unranked Cal Poly and Montana State at home.
Cal Poly's six toughest games come the first 6 weeks of the season with 4 on the road and only 2 at home.
Edge to Cal Poly on the tougher schedule.

I've never understood this game that is played during the off season.

Talking football??? What else is there to do if you are a football fan?

Probably the reason I say Cal Poly has a tougher schedule is while both schedules are very similar EWU is a higher ranked and respect opponent than Cal Poly. I am not trying to start a fight. Just talk football. I have a deep respect for EWU and been there twice to watch Cal Poly play. While I give the nod to Cal Poly, both schedules are brutally tough.

Makes total sense. EWU being the higher ranked team should win = not as difficult. I would then say you are correct in that Cal Poly has a tough schedule....Logical. :thumb: :coffee:

You should. You have a great team this year. It's going to be very difficult for us to overcome, if we do. Best of luck next season.

The bottom line here is that both teams have done themselves a tremendous disservice by increasing their risk without increasing their potential reward.

If Eastern wins 9 games next season, we probably get a first round bye but no home field advantage throughout. IF we win 8, we open in the first round. If you replaced Oregon with New Mexico and UNI with Houston Baptist, and the same would be true... 9 wins would be a first-round bye and 8 would be a first round game. I've never understood the desire to make things more difficult than they need to be.

I can get the Oregon game being played for the money, but UNI? No benefit to this one at all, especially with a difficult non-con FCS game already lined up (Montana State). Next year is even worse with North Dakota State and UNI. It almost seems like we just look at FCS pre-season top 10 and pick 2 teams. There are 120 or so FCS teams to choose from, but we always seem to choose the toughest ones.

Dopa has always hated tough schedules, but I don't mind so much. Fanbases have been asking for more significant cross conference games, and the UNI vs EWU game is a perfect example of one. I don't think UNI will be as tough as last year. Especially not with Johnson gone.

Sure, I would prefer a medium difficulty schedule, but I'm not going to complain over a tough schedule.

Dopa,
I think the scheduling of these games is to make money. I just don't like them, they can cause us and other teams injuries that will hurt the entire season, depending on the nature of the injuries. Have a great Sunday to all. Vic Wallace

I wonder how scheduling affects recruiting. What is important to a recruit? Playing pansies like Western Montana, Southern Oregon, Oklahoma Panhandle State? Or, does Eastern want to recruit and land the kind of athlete that would rather play peers and FBS opponents?

GoldenEagle,
I think the schedules, has a lot to do with the Recruits, especially when play an FBS Team and stick with them or defeat them. Wait a few more weeks, and you will see the talented Players that will be joining the Eagles. We have some speed coming in and some LB that will really stiffen up the Defense. Hope Keenan Williams stays healthy, he will really anchor the defense along with Sarte Monike, and the rest of the remaining Defensive Players. We have a few RB coming, and will add to the Rushing. Was very busy on Campus Friday and Saturday, the State Track meet was going on both days. Once I saw the crowds in Roos Field, I taught we had a secret FB Game, no one was told about. The lots were also packed. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

Again, I can understand playing Oregon for money and notoriety. But do potential recruits really give a crap whether we play Northern Iowa or Bucknell? One team is a sure win, the other is a 50/50 game coming on the heels of a no-hoper that could leave us 0-2 and fighting for our lives two weeks into the season.

The other item to note is we NEVER get creative with FCS games. We basically take the dumb route and play one of the top 2 teams from the MVC or Southland each year. We'd get better exposure and an easier game (and likely more $$$) just playing Idaho every year. If we're going to play FCS non-cons, why not take one fruitcake each year like the St. Francis, Butler, or Savannah State (among scores of teams we'd destroy with certainty every year).

As a season ticket holder I hate watching cupcake games like Western Montana. I would much rather go see us play Sam Houston or N. Iowa knowing that it is a meaningful game and the outcome is in doubt.

I agree that we need to be careful not to get too brutal with our schedule because it could backfire, but my guess is we wouldn't have won a national title with those teams or even made a deep playoff run. It is my belief that this program has risen to a level where we should go into every FCS game with a good chance to win. Ultimately, I think a team that has been tested is a tougher out in the playoffs then one that hasn't been tested by quality competition.

Dopa is right about the schedules.

We basically get to choose our 3 non-conf games every year, sometimes 4 in 12 game years. We really haven't done ourselves any favors with our schedules, and in fact have really set ourselves up for failure in years past.

Just look back the past 5 years.

2010 - probably our easiest schedule. We have 3 non conf games, one against Nevada (our $ game), a home game (kinda) against CWU, and SUU at home. This is what a schedule should be for top tier FCS programs. Play a $ game, play a cupcake at home, play a middle tier FCS at home. What happened, we won the chipper that year.

2011 - we schedule all 3 non conf games as road games. Wash, South Dak, Cal Poly. We play 7 road games to 4 home games. Get creamed early with injuries and losses, no playoffs. Terrible scheduling this year.

2012 - we schedule 2 FBS games, and one home FCS game in our non conf. We use to do this and it was a killer, 2 FBS games in one year. Luckily we beat Idaho in 2012, had we not, we wouldn't have been seeded in 2012 playoffs.

2013 - 12 game year, we schedule 2 FBS games, at Sam Houston, and a cupcake. We beat Oregon State that year, but if we hadn't, we would not have been seeded in the playoffs. This was a terrible schedule, even through we ended up with a top 4 seed.

2014 - 12 game year, 1 FBS, 1 cupcake, 1 FCS at home, 1 FCS on road. Perfect schedule for a 12 game year. Although it would be nice having one of the FCS games be an easier opponent.

If you look at the last 5 years, 2010, the year we won the championship, was our easiest schedule. Had we scheduled another road FBS or FCS game instead of Central and lost, things may have turned out differently that year. In 2012 and 2013 we made the semi's, but we had to win a road FBS game to receive a seed in the playoffs and we can't bank on that year in, year out. I know some of you like our schedules, but had we not won FBS games in 2012 or 2013 we would not have been seeded and played home playoff games.

I'm all for scheduling tough, but i'm more for scheduling our team to be in the playoffs and have an opportunity to win in the playoffs...

Dopa and marceagfan5 I concur. Recruits and players like; Playing a big name FBS team, getting a BSC ring, getting to playoffs, having as many home games as possible, a chance at winning a NC and simply winning as many games as possible. The BSC is a tough league with more than enough talent to prepare us for the playoffs. I realize a lot of things go into scheduling but if winning another NC is the ultimate goal we must give the team the best chance to get home playoff games. Winning as many D1 games do that...winning.
