Thoughts on next years roster

I know it's way too early and there are many questions on who might leave before the season starts but I still think it's fun to guess. At this time it seems like the roster looks like this (also guessing on the rotation):
PG: Glean Dean 5-10 Jr; Cliff Colimon 6-0 Sr.
SG: Jeffrey Forbes 5-10 Jr; Kevin Winford 5-11 Jr
W: Willie Hankins 6-3 Fr; Geoffrey Allen 6-5 So; Rocky Brown 6-6 So.
F: Tremayne Johnson 6-7 Sr; Cliff Ederaine 6-7 Sr; Rashano McRae 6-7 Sr.
F/C: LaRon Griffen 6-8 Sr; Jaylen Henry 6-7 So; Carter Warnock 6-9 Fr.

Best Case Scenario: Every body stays, comes back stronger and more experienced. Tremayne has an all Big Sky year, Willie Hankins is as good as advertised and has 4 years to play (recruited by West Coast Conference teams came to E.W.U. due to academic difficulties it seems), Geoffrey Allen, Jaylen Henry, and Carter Warnock also make big contributions. Glean Dean is Big Sky Player of the Year, Tremayne Johnson and Willie Hankins join Glen on the Big Sky Conference 1st team, Jeffrey Forbes and LaRon Griffen are 2nd team Big Sky, Willie Hankins is the Conference New comer of the Year, LaRon Griffen is the Big Sky Defensive player of the year, Coach Hayford is the Big Sky Coach of the Year, Eastern hosts the Big Sky tournament and wins the Big Sky Conference Championship on ESPN 2 and play as a 15 seed in the NCAA tournament! :D

or

Glen Dean transfers, Rashano McRae is cut (lack of production), and possible transfers unhappy at their current school; i.e. Manny Arop and Mathis Keita join the program.

or

A number of other much different options occur.

Any thoughts?

Is that true that tournament will be in Vegas next year? I have to disagree with NWhoops44 about how low you predict the eags though  This could happen only if the majority of the team transfers.

First of all, I want to congratulate Coach Hayford. I hope he's very successful at Eastern and believe he's a pretty good fit.

That said, I find it interesting that you're picking EWU to finish second in the Big Sky if all of the talent returns intact. If that's the case, why fire Earlywine? In hindsight, it looks like he assembled a pretty good roster, doesn't it? I'm not sure I have the answer, but I just find it frustrating. We've waited and waited for Eastern Washington's basketball team to return to prominence, and when it's close, Chaves pulls the plug. Here's hoping Glen Dean sticks around...

How about no recruiting contact with local talent. Yes I mean no contact with players and families. Poor summer high school programs. No attendance at games. Lack of contacts with Northwest high coaches.
Zero community involement for $$ or interest. Our program was headed 100% in the wrong direction, even if we won more games.

I'd buy the argument about lack of community involvement and lack of local players. But I think it's fairly safe to assume that EWU, barring injuries, would have won a lot more games next season under Earlywine and would have challenged for the league title. And I think it's also safe to say that more wins would have meant bigger crowds and momentum in the bball program -- something that has been sorely needed. Seems like it's a big risk to start over again.

Like I said, I'm not trying to start an argument. Just wondering what others were thinking about this. Any word on who Hayford's assistants will be? Or if he's got any players in mind locally?

Mr. Hayford will win and win big, but it will take him some time. The whole league will be better next year, except Idaho State, especially Portland State. (Look at their redshirts and recruiting)

Mr. Hayford will raise money as well. He had a larger recruiting budget at Whitworth, than all the rest of the NWC schools combined. It would be a big mistake for him to hire Craig Ehlo, a good guy, but someone who really does not do his homework with his TV broadcasts and you wonder about his work ethic.

Lastly, the Big Sky tournament next year will more than likely land in Vegas. It is on the agenda for the Big Sky meetings in May and Vegas has some very good and persuasive marketing people.

There is a REASON, the Mt. West, WAC and WCC go there. It is a no-brainer for the Big Sky, a league which is cash poor and anyway they can save money, they will.

UltimateEag;
If you are so puzzled by the decision not to renew Earlywine's contract, you must not have attended any games. IMHO his antics during games were enough in itself let him go. While he may be a very good basketball mind his actions were not anything to be proud of.

I went to most of the games and, yeah, he was definitely intense. But is that reason to fire him? I'm guessing with more fans there you probably wouldn't have noticed the screaming and foot stomping nearly as much. I guarantee you if Mark Few or Ray Giacoletti coached in front of 500 fans sitting on their hands, you'd hear a few F-bombs and plenty of foot stomping. And once again, it comes back to winning. If the team wins, fans would have come back. Spokane has proven that it's a bandwagon town time and time again. (Spokane Shock, Gonzaga women, etc.)

Whatever ... it's all good. Like I said, I just want to see this team win. I like this group that Earlywine and his staff recruited. They all seem like solid kids and hard workers. Hopefully they stick around and we can see some wins next season.

I would be wiling to take you up on that "guarantee". Short of Bobby Knight, (slightly better record) I have never witness coaching antics as I have from Earlywine. You mentioned 500 fans sitting on their hands is the reason you could hear him, not so. You could hear him on radio broadcasts where there were near full houses. At one point it was kind of comical but did not take long to become embarrassing.
I feel for the guy as I would for anyone geting fired, but it was the thing to do.
Even if you ignore his abrasive style, his record justifies the action of our AD.
I am with you, I want to move forward for the betterment of the bball program all the University.
Go Eags.

Call it like it is:

The biggest negative against Coach Earlywine, was his DUI. Of course time had passed, but a DUI, never passes, just ask Jalen Rose, who was suspended today by ESPN.

We wish him the best, in life, above coaching, but it was an easy dismissal, to say the least.

Last point and I'll drop it: You have noticed where the radio man sits during games? Right next to EWU's bench. Next to Patchin, the coach is the next closest thing to that microphone. Of course he's going to show up on broadcasts.

nwhoops44: I think you hit the nail on the head. It all goes back to the DUI, which could have happened to just about anyone. Oh well...

So back to next year, any word on local players Hayford might be interested in?

The state of Washington is ripe with D-1 recruits right now, the best it has ever been and it will only get better.

Why do you think Gonzaga, fights tooth and nail to keep Seattle U. out of the WCC.

Hayford will have his choice of some pretty good talent for many years to come out of the Evergreen state.

The Spokane area basketball wars just got heated up and it will be a joy to watch, unless Bone gets WSU on probation like he did to Portland State.

There are many "talented" teams that go nowhere. Even if we return everyone, it's still a stretch to have us contending for a conference title. That being said now is the perfect time to change as their is some experiencing returning which increased the pool of coaching candidates and will now pad Hayfords landing a bit.

Hope all of you got the bitterness off your chests. We now have a New MBB Coach, let us turn our attention towards him,his Asst. Coaches, and Players, and hope for the best for our program. I think we are all part of the TEAM, let us get out and support the PROGRAM.

I think we will have an Outstanding Team, and a team to be very proud of. Now if we can open NEW can of OFFICIALS, we could even do better. Clawman, you should volunteer for an official job. I would, but these bones couldn't stand the running up and down the courts. :thumb:

Off The Subject: Now Football

Saw the 1st FB practice today. No Pads. Those young men didn't seem like they lost a step. D. Bronson, Pulu were both at pracrice, they will be great additions to our team. Can't wait to see the rest of the recruits come in on September.

If you check the Spring Roster, you will notice we have lost some players. i.e. Bird Williams taught he should have been starti
ng last year as a Freshman. We were loaded with WR. I guess he became a little impatient. We also have some additions. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic
