Why Weber State is Winless
by hmsben » Wed Oct 17, 2012 12:10 am

Now that Weber State has a new President, one of his first orders of business should be the way the Mr. Bovee handled the replacement for Ron McBride. Here are the reason why Weber State is winless.

First problem, obviously, someone did not do enough of a background check on John L. Smith. A simple credit report would have revealed that he was a potential problem. They could have hired someone else when discrepancies were discovered on Smith's credit report.

Second, Smith fired all but three of Ron McBride's assistants.

Third, Smith did not complete his staff until spring practice had began. The defense began spring practice without a defensive coordinator, who was Jody Sears. He arrived

Third, Jody Sears had nothing to do with recruiting any of the players on the Weber State team. The letters of intent were signed long before Sears was hired.

Fourth, out of the staff that John L. Smith left behind at Weber State, Jody Sears is the most qualified to be a head coach, but not familiar with any of the players on the team. Doesn't know them, their backgrounds or anything about them. Bovee's choice for interim coach should have been one of the assistants that Smith kept in Ogden, someone more familiar with the players on a personal level, like Colton Swann. Outside of football season, coaches are very limited in the amount of time they can spend with players. The coach and the players were strangers to each-other when fall camp kicked off.

Fifth, the death of Jocelyn Stanley had an effect on the team that was not properly dealt with at the time it happened. It should have been behind the team by the time fall camp kicked off. Yes, it happened, and there is a grieving process. But the team should have move on to acceptance as a whole by then. Of course, Ted Stanley probably needs more time to recover. But the whole team?

Sixth, the schedule? The first two games were against FBS teams. Three of the next four games were against ranked FCS teams. Who made this schedule up? Bovee did. It just was not a realistic schedule. Eastern Washington would have struggled to get to 2-4 with this schedule. When Smith ran out of town, the first call that Bovee should have made was to Fresno to beg out of the game. Start with someone like easy like Northern Montana, or better yet, play the Logan Canyon Convent with the off-season you just had.

I say Weber State keeps Sears. He's a good guy. I met him before the McNeese State game and he's a likeable person. He can succeed here.

Let's dump the one responsible for this mess. Let's fire Jerry Bovee!!!

Not sure firing Bovee is the answer, Despite our 0-7 record at the time, look at all the upgrades to both Basketball and football Bovee has been able to bring to Weber State. He is trying, the schedule is tough, but playing Fresno State and BYU is not the reason we have lost the 5 after that, the games against Big SKy foes are NOT scheduled by Bovee, they have been pre scheduled by the Big Sky Conference NOT Bovee, it's not Bovee's fault that Eastern Washington and Cal Poly and McNeese State are ranked in the top 25.

I dont think firing Bovee will help Weber become a Football power anytime soon.

The men's basketball team is on the rise(which is hard to do since it seems to always be competing for the BSC crown. The cross country teams are in excellent, with the women being ranked in the top fifteen nationally. Our volleyball team is improving, and our facilities are improving. I understand that much of the success for those programs belong to the coaches, athletes and former ADs, but Bovee surely deserves credit also.

No one could have know that this misstep with John L Smith was going to occur. I remember that most of the people on this board were giddy that Bovee hired him. Regardless, even though the season has turned out badly, we do have to remember that the way that Bovee handled the situation with JLS made Weber look infinitely more classly then Arkansas, and that was portrayed by the national media.

I understand the frustration with the football team. I want to see them win as much as anyone. I still think if we look at the big picture, it would be unwise to fire Bovee.

Agreed. Bovee has been a positive hire for WSU.

Bovee has done some positive things but I'm not giving him a pass on his screw ups. Hiring John L was a big mistake and has set the football program back years. He screwed up with the new logo as it is generally hated. Several of the sports teams are really struggling (see all women's sports but XC & TF). And dare I bring up the women's hoops coaches' salary again (to be fair I don't know how much control he has over salaries)?

I agree.

Bovee has been a positive for WSU athletics. At the time, hiring JLS was a good move. Hind sight makes it look bad, but everyone's hind sight is 20/20. Sears may or may not be a good head coach. Who really knows. Like I have said before, all options are on the line. If there is someone we can get, who is better than Jody, bring 'em on. We were looking for a BB coach when we found Randy. You could say that we got lucky, but I believe you make your own luck by making the correct choises. It's not a matter of trusting one individual, like Jerry. It's a matter of trusting in the process and the organization. I believe that we have a good organization at WSU. The job will get done.

I'm in ti for the long haul.
