QB Vercher commits to Sacramento State
December, 11, 2012
Dec 117:34PM ETBy Erik McKinney | ESPN.com All year, quarterback Jihad Vercher (Los Angeles/Salesian) simply controlled what he was able to control. Facing constant questions about his 5-foot-11, 198-pound frame, Vercher spent this past offseason impressing everybody who saw him with his arm strength and touch.
Jihad Vercher committed to Sacramento State. While programs were slow to offer Vercher because of concerns about his size, the senior quarterback led his team to an 11-2 record this fall as he completed 62 percent of his passes for 2,128 yards and 21 touchdowns against four interceptions, and rushed for 901 yards and 15 scores.
Offers from Army and Idaho were eventually extended, but on Tuesday, Vercher received one from Sacramento State that quickly put an end to his recruitment.
"I'd been thinking about it for a week or so," Vercher said, adding that he expected the Sacramento State coaches to extend the offer during a visit. "The coaches offered today and I committed. I'm excited to see what Sacramento has in store for me over the next four years.
While Vercher was intrigued by the Idaho offer, he wasn't sure where the outcome of the coaching transition would leave him on their recruiting board, or if the offer would still be good. Instead, he decided to go with the sure thing.
"I've been talking to them for a few months and I did my research," he said. "They run pretty much the same system as us, where they let the quarterback run and throw the rock.
"It makes me feel wanted and needed. They were excited to hear [my commitment]. I'm ready to start working."
Vercher said he plans to visit Sacramento State sometime in January.
