Tickets next year

Just randomly decided to check on hoops tickets for next year, looks like the price went up quite a bit for both reserved and general.

I'm not super clear on this. Do you read "2013-2017 Season Ticket Price" as that's what it costs each of those years or are they trying to sell multiple seasons for the one price? If that's the case, is there a Viking Athletic Fund donation each of those years. Normally, I wouldn't think you'd get multiple seasons for one price, but it seems to strange to have such a jump in pricing after a couple of disappointing seasons with sparse crowds. Just hoping that someone here got something in the mail that explains it.

Before anyone tells me to call the ticket office to ask... I did last week and the person answering the phone didn't seem to have any idea about any of this.

Perhaps a type-o for 2013-2017?

Looks like it's one single price for 4 seasons (I think also leading through to the Viking Pavilion opening?), and donation portion is paid for each year.

Well, they made some corrections to the site that clear things up.

General admission season tickets are now $250 for this season (up from $100). Reserved are now $300 (up from what I thought was $125) + the $100 VAF donation. The $250 price for reserved is per season for the years 2013-2017, and you still have the VAF donation of $100 each year. General admission is $200 per season for 2013-2017.

Single game tickets are $18 for general and $25 for reserved.

I can't see doubling ticket prices doing anything positive for attendance next year. Coming off of a disappointing season, and this year having one of the worst non-conference home schedules that I've ever seen, there might be even more open seats this year. They do play UofP and Idaho, but If they are trying to attract new fans, they are insane charging that much money to see the Viks play Northwest Christian, Pacific Lutheran, Loyola (IL), SIU-Edwardsville, and Evergreen (Yes, those last two really are colleges).

I agree that the schedule this year really is awful, but is part of the season price increase due to the fact that we have more home games this season?

True, it makes sense that a couple of extra games might lead to a small increase in pricing.

But I think my crazy rant really has to do with PSU significantly raising the price of its least expensive seats. My guess is people who have extra money probably are already in reserved seating, and they may not think twice about the increase. It's the general admission people who this will probably hit and may not be able to .

I checked into the other schools and here's what I found.

Oregon State has 18 home games and a cheapest season ticket for $149
University of Oregon has 20 home games and a cheapest season ticket for $150
Portland State has 18 home games and a cheapest season ticket for $250

I just want to see people in the stands so it doesn't look like a crowd for a high school jv game. Not sure this is the answer.

Name me a school- or even a pro team- about to embark on a new building that doesn't increase ticket prices.

Whole bunches of people thought nothing of paying $20 a pop to see the Portland Thorns this year. Tickets going up from $10 (or whatever) to $18 will not be the problem you think it is. The problem is the setting itself.

I guess you're probably right. I just want a packed house this year. I guess that isn't happening either way.

I think the difference is that casual sports fans in Portland love soccer, and the media gives it plenty of attention, so people take it seriously. Thus the thousands of people willing to shell out the money for tickets. People unfamiliar with PSU's team, and that's most people that I know, don't take the program seriously. Because of this, I do think $18 does make a difference when you're being asked to buy tickets to something you are unfamiliar with and the media doesn't cover.

I do hope this doesn't impact attendance. Those players deserve a packed house every night.

It's been quite a while since my last angry rant about ticket prices ;) Here's my take on Stuffing the Stott:

The hope going into this promotion was to have a huge boost in attendance which would lead to packed stands when the Pavilion opens. Men's attendance is actually down compared to last year (even if you don't take into account the Oregon State game when looking at last year's numbers). Women's attendance is also down compared to last year. End this promotion at the end of the season. Let people buy a ticket without having to pay for "free" junkfood.

The Vancouver Volcanoes IBL team shouldn't be outdrawing any D1 basketball program.

Is "Stuffing The Stott" a Dave Hersh idea?

I wonder if he gets 21st Century Portland?

My short term idea: the entrance gates are set way outside, by necessity. You hire food carts to populate outside, within the entry parameter. Let them sell food, take something off the top.

THAT is Portland.
