Time for me to say goodbye

Wow. Have three football seasons really gone by since Jerry Glanville was hired by Portland State?

As someone who has followed The Man In Black since his first stint with the Atlanta Falcons from 1977-1982, it was a great day when my favorite football coach was hired to direct a team again in early 2007. Yes, having him as DC at Hawaii was great - mainly because it meant he was back in the game after a long time away - but now he was a head coach again.

I must admit I have learned a great deal about Portland State in the past three seasons. I have researched the football program (before I only knew that at one time Mouse Davis was head coach and June Jones briefly played there.) Living in Georgia, I would watch for the scores of the VIkings each Saturday on the scroll or would get impatient and fire up my laptop.

I even was fortuante to have a fellow PSU fan make copies of some games that were televised.

It all ended today, however. I admit I am very disappointed in how it has turned out. While I may be in the minority (especially on this board) I still believe Glanville could have turned this thing around. It takes time. I have always said a coach needs five years. In fact, that is what Glanville wanted initially and was even going to walk away when a three-year contract was offered.

Now I read that Glanville was not willing to cut assistants loose or throw them away like yesterday's garbage. Good for him. Too many head coaches sacrifice assistants out of pressure or to save their own jobs. Not Glanville. He has too much character to do that.

I wish PSU the best of luck in finding a new coach. Rest assured, you won't find one with the resume of Jerry Glanville. A man who guided two NFL teams to the playoffs, won playoff games with both teams and is still considered among the elite defensive minds in pro football. The AD who forced this decision is not fit to hold a clipboard for Glanville. That I do know. I also know if PSU does not increase pay and increase pay immediate for football assistants then the program is in serious trouble. $20,000 for some full-time assistants?! That's absurd.

I am extremely disappointed as I said. Still, I enjoyed my time as a PSU fan as I know The Man In Black did his time as the Viking coach. I just hate it ended today.

Best of luck and thank you for welcoming me into the fold.

Best of luck to you and Jerry Glanville. Believe me when I say that (with the obvious exception of the usual whiners) no one at PSU is happy to see Coach Glanville leave. It just didn't work out, but that doesn't mean he's a bad guy or coach. Maybe it's just that the small-college environment is not the right context for an NFL coach.
