I like having quality games, but there are absolutely no outs with our schedule. There's a reason you don't see Alabama load up Ohio State, Washington, and Oklahoma as their non-conference schedule. They'll play one legit team and two patsies, knowing that best sets them up for a long run. If you replaced NDSU with a home game against Mississippi Valley State, 9-2 still gets us a first round bye. 8-3 would, still require things to break in our favor to get a first round bye. Nothing really changes.
Look at Montana's schedule from last year. Despite playing just one "quality" FCS opponent (a 5-6 one, at that) and they still would've made the field at 7-4. And despite playing two FCS nobodies, they, too, would have had a first round bye at 9-2.
Strength of schedule only really matters for sorting the top 5 or so seeds. I think the focus needs to be on ensuring we make the playoffs, not worrying about being a 1 seed or a 5 seed. NDSU won a lot of championships and had at least one, and often two, patsies on every one of those schedules.
