top memorable moment

With arguably the biggest football game in Sac State’s history tomorrow night, I am genuinely interested in the followers who post on this board as to how long they have been following the program. It is not an exercise for bragging rights as to has suffered the longest as a Hornet fan, but how how much old blood, or new blood, if any, are following Hornet football on this site. As well, I would love to hear what may have been your most memorable. I hoping tomorrow night will be historic.

As for me, my first game in attendance was 1998 and top memorable moment was watching Charles Roberts rush for 400 yards in 1999.

I moved into the dorms in 2003 and attended my first Sac State home game against St. Mary’s - complete beat down. I was hooked. I went to practically every home game for a about a decade after that, through some terrible teams.

My favorite moments have been the FBS wins, causeway wins, and the 19/21 magical seasons. I will have a new #1
Moment if we upset SDSU Saturday!

I’ve been a hardcore football fan since I was 6, watching any football I could. Even though I became a lifelong Ohio State fan in the late 70’s, despite growing up in NorCal, I began loosely following the Sac State Hornets when I was in HS in the mid-to-late 80’s. They became my “local team”.

I didn’t start following them really hard until around the time they moved up to FCS and joined the BSC in 1996. And like many of you I have a fond spot for the late 90’s Volek teams with the Hammerheads, Charles Roberts and Ricky Ray (that team should have beaten UM in Missoula!).

My history following Sac State football only goes back to 2019. So in that short time, my top memorable moment (so far) would be this year's win against the Griz in Missoula. Besides being the program's first win at Wa-Griz, my wife and I were there to see it in person! And it was absolutely glorious!

And I will say this about the fans there...they were incredibly nice to us...before AND after the game! I expected we might get heckled a bit going back to the car afterwards and instead, many folks congratulated us on the win and the great game the Hornets had played. We even had folks wanting to give us their extra beer for the trip back to Washington!

Became a fan in 2011. First home game in person was against Northern Colorado in 2012

Most memorable TV moment, Hornets beating Oregon State on the PAC12 network.

Most memorable in person moment, 2017 Causeway. Hornets came out to a big lead, Davis almost came back but Hornets hung on for a 52-47 win.

Not a frequently poster but I do track the content often as it’s only place to get Sac State football info. I played on the team a long time ago back in 98 and 99 when we just started to win vs Big Sky teams. I can tell you that i honestly thought after those seasons it wouldn’t take another 20 years for a big sky title. All that said, the 2019 title was my most special memory because it was closure. My favorite memory as a player was back in 98, when we beat Northern Arizona for first big sky road win. We weren’t suppose to win that one, they had the better team and plus that elevation. After the game, a bunch of players (not I) went out to party in flagstaff and got caught by coaches. They had to a lot of running when right when we arrived back to campus. Sorry for the long story but the question made reminisce a bit.

Went to school throughout most of the 80’s. I worked my way through school so longer than normal tenure. Spent many a Causeway in the rain cheering on the Hornets.
My favorite nostalgic memory was the 1988 Causeway, game 1 and 2. Seeing us win twice was the best experience, then much of the 90’s I was in different parts of the country so I did not keep up as much. Moved back in the mid 2000’s and saw the 2 PAC 12 wins, but for me it was the announcement of Troy Taylor as HC. We had a coaching carousel for many years prior and I knew his hire would forever change the course and direction of Hornet football. 2019 was the start of a course change in Hornet football. I have no doubt if TT stays, we can build something special here!

I remember the teams you were on well. Thanks for sharing!

Please start posting more! It's great to have former players participating. We're building a program and a fanbase here!

Great story!

Thank you @Kadeezy and @BuckeyeHornetFan! I’ll try to post more (a lot of stories). That first ever BigSky road win was special, we were so hype in pregame locker room that our d line coach Shock split his nose in pregame headbutting us without a helmet right before we went out. We had to really get up for games, especially BigSky games because we were new to D-1AA, werent loading with 2/3 star players like now (don’t think that star thing even existed then lol).

I started with Sac in Fall 1997 after completing my associates at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton. (For those keeping score, that was after my one season at UOP in 1995 and finishing the school year out there.) I've followed Hornet football ever since. Charles Roberts was an incredible person, not just as a football player. I'm still in contact with OL Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Angus McClure and OC Bruce Pielstick, two outstanding men of integrity and amazing coaches that I would love to see come back to Sac should circumstances change. That said, however good the program was then, we are soaring to new heights now, and I would love to see more. I can't wait for our win tonight and again next week against 5 Villanova, who surprisingly had a tough time against Holy Cross last night....

Is that you Casey? If it is, hope all is well.

Thanks, everyone. I enjoyed reading your posts, and it has stirred up some additional random and odd and plausibly faulty memories, so I thought I would pile on with a few more by era.

Volek
• If it wasn’t for the excitement of the Volek era, with Roberts, Ray, Hammerheads and crew, I probably wouldn’t have followed Hornet football for all these year.
• Yes, the game at Montana, and feeling terrible about Ray’s fumble on a pitch?
• Hornets were called for a defensive penalty at the end of a game versus Montana State, giving the Bobcats an opportunity to kick the field goal for a win. Volek went nuts.
He was soon let go.
• Learning who Aielen Voisin, the reporter for Sac Bee, was and instantly developing a long-lasting disdain for her slanted view of Hornet football.
• The Mayflower semi-trucks, and the horns blaring
• Former LB standout Ryan Wickman’s father yelling for special teams to be special
• A game against Northridge with the star qb Marcus Brady and nearly 100 pts scored and who knows how many yards of offense on both sides before Hornets secured a win
at home
• Spamgate

Mooshagian
• For some reason, Muscle Milk
• Losses
• WR Ryan Coogler scoring a touchdown, running through the blow-up Hornet Hive tunnel, and getting flagged for un-sportsmanship.
• Losses

The Marshall
• Tailgating in the parking lot for women’s vb match and listening to the play-by-play of the winning field goal to defeat Oregon State in 2011.
• Again, listening to the radio call, and the defeat of the University of Colorado
• Marshall’s overall record was overall disappointing and mediocre despite some big wins.
• Back to back Causeway wins (08, 09)

Sears
• Foggy era, don’t remember too much
• Causeway win or two
• Garrett Safron and DeAndre Carter = gamers

Taylor
• Back to back Big Sky Champs
• Back to back Causweay wins

Best Causeway Experience
• In 1999, a home game with 20,000 raucous fans, the Hornets drubbed the Aggies.

- Shout out to Jason and Steve, who are Hornet football, and I can’t imagine following Hornet football without them. Think of all the dead air and silly and, at times, entertaining chatter during some brutal beatdowns. First time I heard them was I996 (?) and the Hornets were getting blown out at home in a deluge.

- There was also, albeit, only for a few years, a blog covering Hornet football that was more sophomoric and parody than objective coverage.

Hoping tonight tops them all.

Great stories everyone. Lots of great/good players that were enjoyable watching over the years, but focusing on (good) “memorable moments” sure shortens the list quite a bit.

Started as a student in fall 2002 so my Hornet fandom started at the end of the Volek era that was memorable because of Pamgate. Also trudging from the dorms to Hornet Stadium to catch the games while pounding beers with fellow dormies was some good times.

That rolled right into the disastrous Moosh era that had no positive memorable moments.

Sperbeck raised the bar for the program with the most memorable moments for me being the back to back Pac 10/12 wins, and back to back Causeway wins with the ’08 win that broke the losing streak and the Mattos March in ’09 that ended with the students/fans rushing the field and solidified MBT’s Hornet legacy.

Sears era most memorable moments were the Causeway wins in ’14, and ’17. Both of which unfortunately got him extensions that led to more memorable moments for the wrong reasons.

Thank God for Troy Taylor. Lots of memorable moments in the 2 seasons here, so I’ll limit it to these:
2019 win at home against EWU. Me and the fam were in the President’s Terrace and got to see that Hornet pick 6 coming right at us. It was evident at that moment that the culture of the program had changed on a dime. That win sparked the impeccable run of 3 straight wins over ranked teams that put this program on the map.

2019 watching the Hornets secure their first D1 playoff berth with fellow Hornet fans at Clubby with the Idaho win. After all those years of losing I honestly thought we’d never see the playoffs.

2019 Causeway win. This was the first Causeway in which I wasn’t a nervous wreck and not concerned about what the outcome would be. Even after the tipped pass that gave the dungpilers a pick 6, there was calm and not the normal impending doom and expectation of a Hornet collapse. I recall watching the game unfold from my chairback seats, and taking the fam to the north endzone hospitality area in preparation for the game winning drive. Sure enough, my ugly face makes it on the replay jumping up and down with the kido in my arms as Thomson turns the corner and seals the game with his TD run. Then after the game we went on the field to celebrate the Causeway win and BSC Title with the coaches, team, staff, and other Hornet fans.

2019 Austin Peay game. The outcome sucked but huddling under a tent during tailgating with the rest of the tailgaters in my row because of the big storm, and getting to check the “attend a home Hornet FB playoff game” off the bucket list. I stuck it out for the entire game just in case that experience would never happen again.

2021 Montana win. Another Clubby moment with fellow Hornet fans in a Hornet FB first. Libations flowed in great quantity after that dub.

2021 Causeway. Watching the Hornets completely bludgeon the dungpilers to secure another Causeway win, back to back BSC titles and the first Outright BSC Title in Hornet history. Getting to see our guys celebrate it on their turf makes it that much sweeter.

A win over SDSU probably makes top 3 in memorable moments.

Yes, I'm Casey. Glad to hear from you, too.
