Tournament hosting finalists

If I'm reading this correctly, the finalists are: Reno, Billings, Ogden or Spokane for the men; Missoula, Cheney, Reno for the women. And there is the grabber sentence at the end: the presidents reserve the right to keep things as they are.

Fixed link.

Billings and Ogden put forward bids to host the men's championship. Missoula presented a bid to host the women's championship. Reno and Spokane/Cheney submitted bids to host the men's and women's championships.

Link on post states page can't be found...but wanted one clarification, didn't Billing's bid include BOTH men's & women's? Then it appears Weber State's bid would be the only college venue arena finalist for the men's tourney?

Billings was for Men's only.

Billings?!? HAHAHAHAHAH

Lets all hope the university president's are smart enough to keep things they way they are. I'm going to be writing Chuck an email requesting that he keep things the way they are. I might even start a petition. Why change something that isn't broken.

If the presidents truly do decide to go away from the current model (and I'm not convinced they will), I could see Billings as a reasonable alternative. It would be a reasonably "neutral site" (i.e., not on somebody's campus), but close enough to some Big Sky fan bases to draw a few thousand fans.

The best travel, best lodging, and best venue is Ogden. It just depends on how highly they value neutrality. If neutrality is the number one issue, then I don't see how Billings beats out Reno. It's not even close, unless the price of renting the venue is the biggest issue.

I'm betting that they leave it alone, or if they do change, just invite all 12 teams to the mosh. :coffee:

I would think that Reno could offer the conference the best financial deal because they could care less about the rent of the arena, room rates, etc. They want the gambling dollars that the tournament would possibly bring to town. They would possibly get the schools rooms comped by various casinos. It may be hard for anyone to match their bid.

Selfishly I like Reno as the neutral location (closest to Sac State), but I think Spokane has the logistical upper hand. 5 BSC members are within 6 hours of Spokane (rounded times, source: the Google):
  • • 0.5 hrs to Cheney (EWU)
    • 1.5 hrs to Moscow (Idaho)
    • 3.25 hrs to Missoula (UM)
    • 5.5 hrs to Portland (PSU)
    • 6 hrs to Bozeman (MSU)
    • 8.5 hrs to Pocatello (ISU, hobo cheap so they would probably bus it)
    • 10 hrs to Ogden (WSU, would probably fly)
So half of the conference could bus to Spokane, everyone else is flying. SLC might be the next city “closest” to a good number of BSC members but they didn’t bid.

EWU posters pointed out that Spokane has hosted NCAA tournament games recently (and regularly) so that city certainly knows how to plan for a college hoops event. With half the conference within driving distance I would like to think some excitement could be built around a Spokane held BSCT.

The points of discounted rooms by Reno area hotels is certain a valid point as well. I just think if attendance is a key issue, then Spokane offers the best logistics. More people will drive to Spokane than will fly to Reno.

Billings is a non-starter IMO. Not enough schools nearby so a lot would depend on the local populace supporting the BSCT. Ths would be a huge boon for the Montana's so I hope this doesn't happen.

As far as keeping it at BSC member conference to serve as host for an extended number of years...meh. If that is the decision then keep it the way it is.

Just trying to read the tea leaves, the impression is that costs are highest on the President's evaluation, one would think Reno offers the best deal there, as sacstateman posted...if Spokane's bid is close on costs (questionable) then it might garner at least 5 votes in favor, but then you have the neutrality matter with Cheney hosting the women's. Don't forget the whole issue was pushed on the point of a predetermined site. Still think holding it on a conference member campus is a good idea (favoring Ogden for men, Missoula for women). Strong chance the Presidents will vote to keep it as is (with 11 quietly hoping that UND never ends up in 1st again -- women's or men's :kisswink: ). My bet is on Reno for a 3yr. test. RENO AND BUST!
