training table fund

What would it cost to fund a training table for Eastern athletics?
Is it feasible to take pledges here to support the athletes?

clawman,
I see a table out at the games, even in practices. Isn't what I have been seeing all these years a Training Table? I am not sure what we are talking about. I am for helping where I can. With out bragging: My goal when I retired from EWU - University Police Aug 1995, my goal was to repay a minimum of $50,000.00 dollars for Scholarship. Happy to say I am at $46,000.00 as of this date, will be finished soon. I just hope all that have graduated from EWU, can attempt to repay their Scholarships if possible. Off Subject: Friday while at the FB Team walk through, I met #7 Nic Sblendorio Parents, very nice people. His mother said she deserves some credit when Nic make those one handed catches, she said she used to be in Gymnastics and Nic got all that from her. Three cheers for Debbie    :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: ;) ;) ;). I told her they practice that every practice, she is determined her son got that from her ;) ;) ;). See you at Impulse tonight? Vic Wallace

$46k is a very impressive level of giving. Kudos to you, sir!

Yeah, I'm not sure what this is all about either. Eastern has a few training tables, so maybe this is in reference to some kind of metaphorical table?

To clarify a bit, this is another attempt by a great booster to support the program. Nutrition is obviously crucial to maximize the opportunities our student-athletes have. The move toward four year scholarships and enhanced meals are well within the budgets of the biggest schools but basic nutrition for our men/women requires more work than it does at UW, Texas, etc.

I will check with our compliance people (person?) and see what I can find out. I do know the NCAA "occasional meal" rule should be changed and probably has been. When I learned about that a few years back my first thought was that the vague term "occasional" must have come from an attorney. Hopefully the support we can offer as boosters regarding meals/nutrition has been clarified.

Also, if you visit EWU, check out our weight room and the plaque outside. The donors honored there have done tremendous things for our football program, including supporting proper nutrition.

training table = (free and equal access to food for ALL student/athletes)

I agree. EWU is now at a level that a training table should be within reach (pending any rules) in my unqualified opinion :). If athletes had access to food that's open during the hours needed, we would see a difference on on the field to some extent. I truly believe that. In it's current form, athlete without outside resources or support, struggle to get the required nutrients required to thrive, especially partial schollies or walkons. The honest fact is most of these same athletes see playing time and have to figure out ways to eat, at times. This is a fact. It happens here and across america.

I personally think the NCAA should make every school pay into a fund (based on their Athl. department earnings) to stamp out hunger among the athletes of theses smaller FCS schools.

Make no mistake, small schools like EWU would struggle - but as a whole, I believe and trust this coaching staff is doing whatever it can to deal with this issue within the rules.

I'm glad it was brought up. I've been saying this for a while. A training table (free and equal access to food for ALL athletes) is a must- in my opinion.

Does anyone know if Montana or any other Big sky has a training table, i was told they did. I would be shocked if the schools back east didn't. Their team size just seem to be bigger.

my buddy played at Montana and he told me they had a training table open 24 hours for all athletes to eat. I think he's pulling my chain, but i though I would access

Great thread, we're all learning how we might be able to step up and support proper nutrition for all our student-athletes within NCAA rules. In my opinion this will become a bigger recruiting issue in the near future as some schools figure this out and others don't. Thanks Clawman for bringing up this topic.

JoinTheEaf,
Don't want to feel like I am a "Dummy" ;) ;) ;) ;). In my 81 years following sports, I have never heard of the Training Table for food. I always hear let us go eat the dining Services, etc. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: We are never to old to learn. :o :o :o Some of the reasons I started to invite some of our Athletes to a meal at my residence, is when I sit around and hear them saying to each other that they were going home to eat some Top Remen, and they was easy to cook. 14 years ago I started having Occasional Meals at my residence. Had my wife lived, I wouldn't have known these young men and women in our program, they wouldn't have know me. My goal was to take care of my Wife and family after I had retired in life, she passed on 16 years ago in August 1999. I love those young women and men in our programs, as if they are my sons and daughters away from home. When I help them, I am not looking for anything in return, just love doing it and make sure it is legal. I always contact our "EWU Compliance Coordinator. NCAA Bylaw 16.11.1.5 requires everything about Request Of Occasional Meal. Have a great day. I'm in for Funds to help with "Our Training Table". Vic Wallace

Vic, all your support is truly appreciated!

It may be a regional thing because back East that's what we call it and I've often wondered why when I mentioned it in other topics or conversations, people seemed to be confused.

I was surprised when my son got to school that there wasn't more nutritional support given to the athletes especially since so much is asked of them. When I found out they were on their own I was glad he knew his way around a kitchen and we had the resources to help out with food! As hard as all those young men and women work, wondering if they're going to have enough of the right kind of food to eat shouldn't be something they have to worry about!

HannahO,
Thanks for the information. Like I've said before, I taught we were talking about regular training table. See I learned something new in life. I am willing to assist in anyway I can to help our Athletes. I just want to keep it from any type of NCAA Violations. I know how hard both our women and men in our program works, and the hours they are putting into their sports, and maintaining the GPA as high as they are. I spoke to some of the Players today after practice, they are not familiar with this program, and some have heard of it. I spoke to one of our Recruits today, his 1st day at practice, he was home with Mono, he is at 153 Lbs, he is of course redshirting. I am ready to go back to work and assist if I can legally. Again nice hearing from you. Hope everyone is doing fine. Vic Wallace
