transfer portal

How is the portal affecting FCS football? How is it affecting recruiting? Last week on XM ch 84 ESPN sports radio a major college coach said he felt it would have a negative affect on high school kids because some coaches will shop their needs on the portal before recruiting. Will "shopping" become more prominent than developing young players? Montana has taken quite a few transfers this year. We also have a couple of transfers both in and out.
Why did Chris Ojoh transfer to New Mexico State, not exactly a step up??
I realize it is not the portal as much as the change in rules that players do not have to sit out 1 year before they can play

Another example of thinking you're better than the level you're playing at, in my opinion. I liked Ojoh a lot but I think he thought he was better than FCS. I think he realized quickly it was a mistake when no power 5 schools came calling and he took the first FBS chance he had at NMSU when Kevin Maurice took a job there.

Luckily for us, LB is probably the position we could stand the loss most, have Sendelbach and Graham holding things down just fine.

I know Eastern has never had a transfer-heavy philosophy, but I think we will have to get more active in the transfer market moving forward. Times have changed, and Eastern will need to evolve with the times. I doubt we ever pursue transfers the way Montana does, but finding a couple of guys each year that can fill voids would be helpful. Eli Doyle was a transfer and has dramatically helped the team.

As for Ojoh, why he left for New Mexico State is anyone's guess. I don't think it was a step forward for him in any sense.

Graham was also a transfer a couple of years back but as it was after Idaho had moved back to FCS I believe he had to sit out a year.

In addition to Doyle I think we have a transfer QB from Arizona State on the roster.

I agree that we’re never going to be a transfer heavy program but when there is in an immediate need in a position I have no problems looking for options in the transfer market.

Thats funny, "when there is an immediate need" is subjective. We as fans believe we see needs and more importantly the coaches see needs but the kid that signed out of high school and worked his a$$ off for a couple of years then here comes a transfer that bumps out of playing time does not feel there is a need 8-) .
I do understand what you are saying though

I'm not sold on "shopping" the transfer portal yet except for specialty positions such as kickers and punter.
We seem to have trouble finding a kicker that can even reach the end zone on kick offs. Fortunately we don't often kick field goals but that could be a problem as well.
Anybody know if the Eagles recruit kicker in high school? Is it a scholarship position?

Don't know what's out there. The average is about 70% across FBS and FCS. If they can't be an FBS starter, not sure we'll do better than the legs we got. No one ever wants it to come down to a FG. Alcabendas wasn't perfect his first couple of season's either. 68% the year before his great season 11 for 15. Harrison was perfect as a Freshman 12 for 12. Are we just spoiled? Back to back perfect kicking seasons can do that to a fan base :-)

Can see were it may come down to a kick in a couple of games remaining games on the schedule, not to mention that returner for Weber on special teams. Guy can fly and is averaging 32 yds a return. Flowers is number 1 at Montana and saw his impact on the game. Just another thing to keep Dopa up at night.

Kickers hard to figure. A really good one outta high school isn't a lock since they use a block(a tee of sorts 1" to 2" high)) to kick off of and no blocks allowed in college. There is a big advantage to using that block(field conditions and weather). Remember many years ago we offered a kicker a partial right out of high school. He was like a top ten rated kicker. Didn't make it washed out early. I believe most are walk-ons(including punters), especially FCS since those scholarships are so valuable. They can work themselves into partials and maybe a full ride..maybe... especially if also good punters.

HS in GA doesn't use a block. Are they still using those in WA?

I don't know what state's allow blocks to be used. There's a NFHS that has their rule book and each State has their own Athletic Associations with their rule books. Not sure when they stopped allowing them(if they have) in what states. After a brief google can't find anything firm and spent enough time on that subject.

I did find this on EWU offering a partial to a kicker who kicked a 67 yarder in high school;

All good Obzerver. Know there are bigger fish to fry.
