Can anybody tell me why Trevyn Smith hasnt been added to the Walter Payton watch list???

He didnt even get on it last year, he has led the BSC in rushing 3 years in a row, became the leading rusher at Weber, LED THE NATION in touchdowns.

Trevyn is about to become the top rusher in the Big SKy 4 years straight and he isnt even getting any notice from anybody. What the Heck?

Can you only have 1 player a team on it?

They are releasing the names four at a time in alphabetical order. The final four will be released this week, and I'm sure Trevyn will be one of the final four.

It's too bad Toone can't be on the list. I guess 3 from one school is just too many. Last season he lead the nation in yards so you'd think he'd be on the list. We'll see what happens.

Last season they would modify the list during the season, take some off and add some others. Not as easy to win though as a wide-out.

If I remember correctly wasn't Stewart, Salam & Westbrook all Heisman candidates at Colorado in 1994?

Weber's Smith Added to Payton List
Jon Kasper - Big Sky Conference
8/4/2009

Ogden, Utah (August 4, 2009) - Weber State senior running back Trevyn Smith was added to the Walter Payton Award watch list, the Sports Network Announced on Tuesday.

Smith was accompanied by New Hampshire quarterback R.J. Toman, San Diego quarterback Sebastian Trujillo, and Monmouth running back David Sinisi as the last four to be included on the list of 20 preseason candidates. Eastern Washington quarterback Matt Nichols, Montana running back Chase Reynolds and Weber State quarterback Cameron Higgins were previously named to the list.

The Walter Payton Award is presented to the top offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision. The Sports Network also released the final four names for the Buck Buchanan Award watch list. The Buchanan is awarded to the top defensive player in the FCS.

Weber State senior cornerback Josh Morris and Montana State defensive end Dane Fletcher are candidates for the Buchanan.

Smith, a 5-foot-9, 210-pounder from Springville, Utah, enjoyed a sensational junior campaign, tying a Big Sky single-season record with 28 touchdowns. He led the league in average rushing yards per game for the third straight season at 113.2. He rushed for 1,573 yards, with 21 touchdowns. He also caught 62 passes for 778 yards and seven touchdowns. His 2,363 all-purpose yards were the third-most in Big Sky single-season history. Smith earned second team All-America accolades from the Associated Press and the Sports Network.

Weber State enjoyed one of its best season in school history in 2008, sharing the conference championship for the first time since 1968, amassing 10 overall victories, and advancing to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs.

Smith has been named first-team All-Conference three straight seasons, and can become just the third player in conference history to earn the honor four times.

Smith enters his senior season sixth on the Big Sky’s all-time rushing list with 4,028 yards, and needs just 460 yards to move into third place.

The Sports Network previously named Smith to its preseason All-America first team.

A record six Big Sky players have won the Payton Award since its inception in 1987. The Big Sky has claimed three Buchanan Awards, including the previous two by Montana’s Kroy Biermann in 2007 and Eastern Washington’s Greg Peach in 2008.

The lists will be revised in October and again in November prior to the announcement of the final ballot.

The awards will be presented on Dec. 17, in Chattanooga, Tenn., and will be selected by a pan of FCS sports information directors, writers, broadcasters and other football experts at the conclusion of the regular season.
