IMO, the above seems important as it had been rumored that Cal’s current HC Justin Wilcox might take that job therein opening the Cal gig.
I’m of the strong the belief CAL is the potential opening we should be most concerned about. As long as Wilcox stays put, we are likely safe.
Reasons are plentiful.
One, based upon Taylor’s own comments both past and present, I don’t believe he’s wanting to leave the area right now, if ever. However CAL just might be “close enough”.
Two, unlike every other FBS program, CAL has a special connection to Taylor thus just might be more motivated to hire an FCS coach. And could sell the hire to boosters much more easily than elsewhere.
Thirdly, I don’t see Taylor leaving for an FBS program not in a P5 conference. Like a Fresno or San Jose State. And beyond CAL, I agree that there won’t be many if any P5 programs willing to hire someone (or able to convince boosters) that only has 2 years success coaching an FCS program.
It took Craig Bohl 11-seasons at NDST to get the gig at Wyoming then his successor Chris Klieman coached 5-seasons before getting the Kansas State gig.
And both those coaches won 7 Nat’l championships between them. Meanwhile Taylor hasn’t even managed a playoff win yet.
In summary, let’s be glad the CAL gig isn’t open.
