Jeff Budinich and Tre Johnson have been suspended from the Montana State men’s basketball program, Bobcat coach Brad Huse announced Tuesday.
Budinich (Maple Valley, Wash.) and Johnson (Reno, Nevada), each junior forwards, will not participate in team-related activities after violating program rules over the weekend.
“Tre and Jeff will not participate in team activities, and that’s really the only comment I can make at this point,” Huse said in a press release. “I’m disappointed that we’re in this situation.”
According to Bozeman police reports, Budinich and Johnson were arrested and charged with two counts each of criminal trespass into a vehicle and theft. At around 1:12 a.m. Sunday, Bozeman police were called to the Cooper Park area for a report of two males shining flashlights into parked vehicles.
An officer found them walking on Alderson Street and spotted a GPS unit sticking out of Johnson’s pocket, according to court documents. When asked if the GPS was his, Johnson told the officer it was not. Budinich agreed to talk to police and admitted that he and Johnson had entered two parked vehicles and had stolen items from inside them. They were both taken to the Gallatin County Detention Center and held on $1,820 bond each. They have since been released. Both have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Johnson was fourth on the team in scoring (9.0 points), first in rebounds (6.2) and second in blocks (1.1) while starting 20 of 26 games played last winter. He had two double-doubles and led the team in scoring four times, rebounds eight times and blocks three times.
Budinich averaged 4.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game in 25 games. He led the team in scoring once (against rival Montana) and scored 69 of 116 points from 3-point range, hitting 22 triples through the year.
When pressed for further information, Huse said “(MSU Assistant AD of Media Relations Bill Lamberty) just sent a release out. That will constitute the comments for now.”
