UC Davis Could Cut As Many As 9 Sports Teams

I saw the teaser for this before Channel 13 news last night. It may be the Ags, but it's never good to see CA universities considering deep cuts to programs that round out the college experience. Tough sign of the times (and our broken state government.)

UC Davis Could Cut As Many As 9 Sports Teams

DAVIS, Calif. (CBS13) ― UC Davis is slashing sports to save money. It may sideline up to nine sports teams to tackle their deficit.

"As if our trust in administration isn't bad enough with the constant pay raises," said a student.

The meeting is packed past capacity, with student athletes crowding every corner, asking the council representing all students to stop sports from being eliminated.

"It's just an injustice to cut sports without giving us a chance to fight for our team," said a student.

Around $2 million will be cut from athletics, mostly from coaches' salaries. Out of the university's 27 teams, nine could be cut.

"They are not being true leaders, which is what our athletic administrators are supposed to do," said a student.

It took students only two days to collect more than 2,000 signatures to save sports. Athletes say the cuts would violate a 15-year-old contract between the university and its students, guaranteeing the college would maintain at least 23 teams.

"If they can violate this one, what's to stop them from violating other one?" asked a student.

Teams that generate money, like football, are safe from elimination. But athletes want all teams protected for one year to give them time to raise the money to keep their sports afloat.

"This wasn't told to us in an amount of time we could save our team," said a student.

Students also want another proposal considered that would spread cuts across the board, meaning that every sport would lose some money so they can all survive.

"Unless teams that are supposedly safe are also taking a cut, it isn't fair," said a student.

No one from the athletic administration attended the meeting and our requests for an on-camera interview were turned down.

We were told the process is ongoing and no final decision has been made.
