UC Davis game

8 mins to go in the 1st half. 16 of our 21 shots have been 3's. Of course we have only made 3 of the 16. Must just be bad luck again. And our defense is "holding" Davis to 62%. We're behind 28-11.

Now 48-40 Davis. Seems like all we can do is shoot three's. Don't we have like two 7 foot kids on this team, Seems like we could do something on the inside.

Wow, now 56-40. Gunna be a long season, I think.

*Edit- Daniel Hill just stepped onto the the court for the first time this season. Guess that answers the question on his RS.

We will be fine everyone. Just working out the kinks. Almost set a record for 3's in a game! Just unlucky inside the paint and unlucky that UC Davis was hitting shots. Hayford is a great coach. Still think we finish in top two and he is a Coach of the Year candidate! Getting Chiverton back will help a ton.

Probably because we set a record for fewest shots attempted inside the paint. I know bud is legal now, but maybe you should cut back a little.

Unless there is drastic improvement in shot attempts inside the paint and defense, we will not finish in the top half of the conference this year, IMO. That was a 1-6 UC-Davis team who lost to NAU last month. More or less the same NAU team that went 1-15 in the BSC and 5-24 overall last year....

We have the talent. We have a coach that has won championships and hundreds of games. UC Davis got lucky. You will see. The team will respond come conference time. Chiverton will be the savior!

Hey 1990 and others, we've been "working out the kinks" for over a month now. Tonight's game was versus the #246 RPI team in the country, we had a lot of time to get ready for the game, and we still got crushed by 20+ points. This game was against the type of team that is supposed to allow us to get the kinks worked out.

It has nothing to do with kinks, and everything to do with our lack of toughness and discipline. Our defense and rebounding are PATHETIC! We allowed Davis to shoot 50%, which happens nearly every game for us, and even worse, we allowed them to shoot 50% from beyond the 3 point line! We got outrebounded by 7 even though Davis was playing without their starting power forward who is their leading rebounder. We shot a measly 10 free throws for the entire game but what should we expect when we take 41 three pointers?!

No defense. No rebounding. Terrible shot selection. This is AWFUL basketball!

Hey 1990, I am curious why you state that Hayford is a "great coach"??? Is it because of what he did at Whitworth? If so, I will remind you what I said on this board when he was being interviewed for our job: Division 1 and Division 3 are completely different ball games. He did a "great" job at Whitworth, but not so far in D1 versus the big boys. He looks overmatched to me. Hopefully, he'll catch up to the learning curve pretty soon.

You make some good points but I still think Coach gets it done this year. You are what your record says you are and I would bet my mobile home that we finish in top two at end of year. Gotta have faith!

I'm assuming you have a house and are just renting the mobile home out to a relocated Griz fan?

Agree 1990 - you are what your record says you are. We are 2-8 and Coach is well below .500 in Division 1. And if you think we are going to finish in the top 3 in the conference, or that Chiverton is going to be our savior, you must be smoking a lot of that stuff you are growing in and around your mobile home! There is a reason he got kicked off the team at St Mary's and his junior college - he smokes a lot of that same stuff you do!!!! Hell, everybody knew it, and we took him anyway! If you lie with dogs, you tend to get fleas - and we are doing a lot of scratching right now.

1990 - remember this: that stuff might be legal now, but there is a limit to how much you can have, and I suspect you might be pushing the limit!!!

Whoa :tothehand: And I thought this was a basketball forum?
Personal attacks aside, it was good to see Daniel Hill take the floor and big Jorg :D
Coach will be still trying things.
Maybe you think I am smoking too because I think Coach will get it together.
We need to have faith - conference games are up next and the boys need some encouragement not a bunch of us slanging insults at each other.
Didn't get to follow the game because I had to catch up on work for the end of the year :(
Someone told me the fouls weren't being called first half.
Patches of play in all games have shown promise. We do have the players :D
Just have to leave this one
Got to look forward to the next home game.
Guess I am a true believer
Go eags :thumb:

I watched the majority of the game on a terrible Big West TV UStream. This was actually my first time seeing the guys this year. All I can say is I have no clue what they were doing on offense (defense aside). There weren't many ball screens, little movement, hardly any penetration by guards, and a whole lot of 3's. I think the game started something like 21-6 bad guys and the 3's never stopped. It was painful. We have some big bangers inside with Jois and Seiferth we should try to get them the ball on the block or have the guards penetrate and shoot higher percentage shots. Long 3's don't allow for good offensive rebound opportunities. What I watched was bad, really bad ball offensively. I know they are super young and without perhaps their best athlete/penetrator in Chiv so let's hope they learn from this one and clean it up in BSC play. I loved that Fullerton win so I know this team has some skills, but man I didn't see anything to like last night except maybe Kelly.

I haven't seen many of the games this year, but we sure haven't looked good. I know we lost a lot from last years team, but we kept hearing about these recruits, and I know we are only 10 games in but, wow, we have not looked good.

We live and die by the 3 and that's a tough road to go when we don't shoot well, which is going to happen at times. Looking at our schedule, we have played some pretty easy teams and we are only 2-8, I thought we would be 7-3 or better looking at who we would be playing to start the season.

Hopefully we will get it together for conference play as that is all that really matters in the Big Sky anyways. We will find out a lot about these guys and how we will fare in conference as we get Weber at Home in the first week and the Griz on the road in week 2. The conference the last few years has gone through those schools...

Yeah, I'm on board with the fact we're terrible... again. I admittedly know next to nothing about basketball, but I know enough about sports to say when you lose repeatedly to teams who aren't any good, it's a pretty good indication that you're no good either. The Big Sky isn't a basketball hotbed, but there are a lot of teams better than UC Davis--- and they just pistol-whipped eastern by 22.

I don't know much about basketball strategies, but these continual no-shows are a bad indication. Our b-ball coach makes as much as Coach Baldwin. Time to win.

Just to clarify I did not see the game but this sounds a lot like what I have seen from the two games I have watched versus Idaho and WSU. Just painful to watch.
Didn't we get all those big tall fellas for a reason. They are going to get bored and not to want run if they are not seeing the rock. Even the greatest players get bored of running if they are not seeing the ball. FEED the beasts down low!!

Looks like I am in the minority in thinking we will be good. Good points everyone. I am going to research how we compare to other teams and see what I can find. Coach has made all the teams that have beaten us sound like they are really good. Conference play is what matters so I hope the super tough pre-conference games have helped prepare us!

I listened to the game and I think everyone can agree that this was a poor effort. The team doesn't seem to play sound defensively and the complete reliance of the 3 point shots is frustating to say the least. I only hope that we can turn the corner come conference play but right now it's not looking to good.
