UC Irvine Saturday

WILDCAT

Saturday Nov 19th, the Wildcats and the Anteaters will meet for only the 2nd time.

The Wildcats lead the series 1-0, although I dont recall when we played them last.

So far on this very early season, they are 0-2 with losses coming @ # 24 Cal (77-56) and @ San Jose State (51-50).

This will be thier home opener and will be a very tough challenge for us, nobody really quite stands out as the big go to guy on this team, Will Davis II is the teams leading scorer at 10 PPG and is the leading rebounder at 9 REB.

D-Lill and co are gonna need to play a complete game to come out winners. Road tests are always tough.

Anybody know if this is the first part of a home and home?

I heard that the UC Irvine is a home and home when the schedule was released earlier this year. Irvine has a good coach in Russ Turner, but he has some re-building to do. Will be fun to see them in the Dee next fall.

Weber needs to get more home and homes with Big West schools, I wouldnt mind playing Northridge again or Poly or Davis.

I heard a rumor that Weber was trying to get home and homes started with Poly and Davis, anybody hear anything about that?

I'm sure that Weber contacts a lot of Big West and WCC schools looking for possible home and homes. Problem is, nobody wants to play us in the Dee. Last night was a great example why. Oh how I wish every game was like that.

Anyway, I'm thinking that the Cats don't have a lot of time to celebrate their big win over USU, they have a good solid matchup looming against Irvine on Saturday. I'm thinking the Cats should win, but you never know when playing against the Big West at their place. The last two times Weber played at Big West schools some strange things happened. The Long Beach melt down and the 38 3 attempts at Santa Barbara where the Gauchos shot 45 FTs?

UC Irvine is a very young team http://ucirvine.prestosports.com/sports/m-baskbl/2011-12/roster" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . They have 10 underclassmen on their roster, with 8 being Freshmen. A familiar name, for Wildcat fans, is among their roster; Collin Woods (a highly touted recruit who decided on going to Irvine).

Irvine has played two games, both on the road, so far on this young season. They opened their season against Cal and SJSU (both teams are on Weber's schedule too). As of right now, Freshman Forward Will DAvis II is their leading scorer hitting .45% of his shots and acconting for 10ppg. Collin Woods, so far, has played 39mins and scored 8 points on .273% shooting. Other players to watch out for are: Freshman Aaron Wright (G 6-3), Chris McNealy (G 6-4 Soph), and Adam Folker (C 6-9 JR). Irvine has forced 31 TOs on the season to their 27 (13.5 TOs a game). They have only hit 7 3's on the season, but have only allowed 11 made against them in two games. They don't appear to be very solid at the FT line, hitting only .50% of their freebies. Teams are only shooting .370% against them this season. Honestly, Cal didn't look that great against them, but neither did SJSU who got beat by fellow Big West mate Cal Poly (Poly isn't the most solid team, but it is a new year) by 20 the game before beating Irvine by 1.

Cal Box Score:

San Jose Box Score:

All in all, as long as the Cats play their game, get a good inside out or outside in game going, I feel like they should win by a decent amount. If Irvine tries to run on Weber, it might be a long game for the Anteaters.

I'm interested to see how Tresnak, Mahoney, Fulton and Hajek perform against Irvine's bigs. Their only center/forward with any real experience is Adam Folker (6-9, 230), who hit what seemed to be the game-winning shot at the buzzer against San Jose State the other night, but it was reviewed and called no good. This would be a great game to see WSU's guys gain some confidence in the paint and really open things up for Lillard and Scotty outside (as if they even need it).

CatFan, Carl Arky told me he will be there with a 1280 radio feed. I can not find any links showing a way to view the game online. BigWest TV does not list it as an option either.

GO WILDCATS

 :notworthy:   :thumb: :+1: :check:  :hump:   :grizo1:

Yeah, Bigwest TV is showing two Volley Ball matches on Saturday night. I'm thinking that Irvine doesn't have anything set up in their gym providing fans with a live streaming option.

On paper, this looks like another 10 point win. But I keep having nightmares about our last win against the Aggies: It was followed by losses to D2 CS San Bernardino and then Youngstown State. So this road game will be a good test for the team leaders on how they drive the response after an emotional win.
