I'd like to agree about them exploring their options but where would they have been without Eastern recruiting them. No loyalty!EWU98 said:Well the brothers have entered the portal...feel like got kicked in the nuts multiple times....a day after some good vibes...:-(
Don't blame them for exploring their options, but man this is brutal.
NCAA needs to look at the rules.
I don't know that it is quite that bad but this is certainly an opportunity for Coach Riley to show his leadership capabilities.LDopaPDX said:Uh... what a disaster. Wasn’t Riley hired based largely on the fact he’d keep the team together? Eastern went from a team moving upward to a team in total disarray in a matter of a week. This literally has turned from great into a total fucking mess in the matter of about 120 hours.
I get the loyalty thing but my biggest thing is you playing in a different system and now having a target on your back with maybe zero supporting cast next to you. Also are the brothers a package deal?clawman said:I'd like to agree about them exploring their options but where would they have been without Eastern recruiting them. I am still holding out hopethat they stay but Riley needs to recruit the shit out of them...which sounds gross but he does. Also keep those recruits!

If they've got it in their heads the grass may be greener, I doubt anything Riley could say is going to make them appreciate what Eastern has done for them, they are just ungrateful kids. But as we all know there are a lot of them now days.
EWU98 said:Fortunately I don't think it is really Riley's fault. Our success last year was the culperate and the one transfer rule as well as the extra year of eligibility.
Honestly if I had a chance to move on to Stanford from EWU and I have a couple of years remaining to play I probably would jump too.
Looking around the Big Sky it is a issue everywhere. I think I saw that 36 players had entered the portal as of yesterday. If you want a great take on EWU and the rest of college basketball listen to Larry Weirs podcast and zoom to the end to the 28 minute mark. He pretty much sums things up nicely.

I would hate to be a coach at a D1 school these days...having to recruit new kids and then having to reload with transfers and such every year ...no thank you.
The media is all GU crazy right now (rightfully so) so with the old saying "if it bleeds it leads" unless we are bleeding we will see no press no matter how positive it is. But seeing as we are technically bleeding players it gets picked up....for now.LDopaPDX said:EWU98 said:Fortunately I don't think it is really Riley's fault. I'm sure you're right, at least to a degree. The NCAA is pushing for schools like Eastern to have their talent pilfered. It makes it extremely hard for a school to build from minor power to major power when you create rules that allow talent to be liquidated. When you go back and looks at Gonzaga's rise over the last 20+ years, one thing that stands out is that they kept their players. When you find a good one, you need to keep them in your program.
What concerns me the most is the mismanagement of the message. Between the new coach and AD, there needs to be an understanding of the PR process. Since getting bounced from the tournament, literally every shred of news out of the program isn't just bad, it's apocalyptic. If this was basically a foretold prophesy that these guys were leaving, than certainly there has been some preparation for it. We can't just bring up new freshman, because we don't have access to the kind of recruit that's going to come in a be an immediate star. Rodney Stuckey's are generational at Eastern, not an every-year occurrence. While Gonzaga is out there pushing news of their next generation of talent, Eastern hasn't said much of anything. If you want an example of great messaging control, Gonzaga is a great place to look... because they clearly get it.
So the only route that would help is the transfer route, and we're gonna need a lot of them. Kim Aiken is the only baller left on the team, as the 5 guys who quit were basically 5 of the 6 best players on the team. Venters showed promise, and he and Magnusson are the only real impact guys left. So if you've got guys lined up to come in for next season, you might want to make sure that info is leaked somehow to the media. If I was an in-demand player--- or hell, even a booster--- I see this news as Eastern not having a clue how to run a program.

Maybe these players have been thinking about this(for awhile) and that's one reason legans left now. Could these players been able to contact other teams in advance of announcing their intent to enter portal? Could players follow legans? Can players simply decide to return back to their teams even though coaches may be trying to replace them as we speak(I would)? Wonder if they don't find their dream team if a coach would say...sorry we filled your spot? Does EWU just keep quite and hope for the best?
It is the same that way...they can truly come back but if I'm a coach I'm not waiting around because I'm not going to be the coach with 6 walk ons at the end of the day because I waited for someone to come back. I am sure there is a deadline for them to opt back in but I hope the window is short. Because spring signing time is coming up quick. And if I'm looking to rebuild I'm looking at the HS kids 1st then the transfers.clawman said:Obzerver said:clawman, not knowing how the portal/eligibility ect. all work that thought crossed my mind. There has to be some balance, I would hope. In my business employees are welcome to ask for reference letter with no consequences other than knowing that if you want to shop around, so am I. It is also common knowledge that we DO NOT rehire, if you quit for another job bye bye it is over. Why can't the transfees be the same?
