44-26 Points in the Paint

Oosdyke is all of 5'11" ...28 points w/most under the basket.

Matador Defense: Wave the cape as the bull rushes by.

Very weak interior defense...who ever heard the word "denial". Why do you play behind a player who is 2' from the basket?

KV breaks out of shooting slump, rebounds well, but Oosdyke scores 28.

The coaches appear to have disregarded our recommendations. I told you so.

Well, it's 2 league games in a row now that we've been manhandled in the paint. In her pre-game talk Murrell said that she had been riding the team hard all week in practice and that defense was all about desire, about playing with energy and moving your feet. Well that strategy worked really well now as the UNC announcer said it best towards the end of the game: "the NC Bears have been able to score at will tonight against these Portland State Vikings".

Yup, once again the PSU coaches can't seem to see what everyone else can, that we don't have ANY interior defense when we are playing with our short posts in a NON-ZONE. We start 3 guards and 2 forwards and are short. Can't Murrell see this? The other coaches sure can. They attack our undersized frontcourt like a pack of wolves and it's not fun to watch. That Oosdyke gal (28 pts) was driving the lane so much we should have opened a toll booth and at least made some money on the deal! Their whole strategy was to work the ball inside, put up a shot, usually make it or have a good chance at the offensive board for a second go-around.

Murrell appears to have a pathological stubborness in her refusal to play a zone defense. Our present defensive scheme sucks because we are slow getting back on defense because everyone is looking around for their person to guard in Murrell's man-to-man scheme. All the other team has to do is run the ball and drive the lane for a primary, easy shot. If that fails, they use superior height inside to grab O boards, then initiate some defensive switches on our smaller defenders, capitalize on size mismatches, and go for more high percentage inside shots. It's a recipe that other coaches in the league will unfortunately be using against us from watching film of these first 2 games.

Get a clue coach! We need to change our defense in a hurry or we'll be in such a hole that post season will be just a pipe dream. Focus on 2 things: 1) get back quickly on defense. 2) set up in a zone (any flavor will do).
Also, get Wade back on the floor. It's a shame that PSU's best shotblocker sits on the bench virtually the entire game while we're getting KILLED in the paint.
