UND out of the Sky?

Hummmm, interesting. Gone before they even started?

Makes since, back in the WAC scramble, I guess Fullerton had to hedge his bets against the possibility of Sac State, Montana, MSU and PSU departing the Sky.

Shamzam, add SUU, UND, UCFE and CP, breaking decades old tradition.

Now that everyone is staying home and an odd number in the conference, outlier UND looks suspect.

IMO, who gives the right of the membership of the NCAA to tell other member schools how to run their school, especially when it comes to the school mascot? The NCAA and the Big Sky need to butt out of UND's name! It's not their place.

Well, the letter doesn't seem to say anything about booting UND. It just raises concerns that the mascot might cause a future problem.

Personally, I would agree with SHA about the Sky keeping out of UND's business. When does this interference stop? It could spread to tree-huggers objecting to the objectification of grizzly bears and wildcats. People who are of Norse descent might object to the "caricature" of PSU's Viking. And those whose kids have been stung by bees might object to our own Hornet mascot.

While this might seem a bit far-fetched, Fullerton is opening a can of worms here. UND COULD choose to leave over it. While I would like to see them go, I would much rather have it be over the "real" issue of travel costs than something bogus like the league office interfering in personal business.

This just goes to show how bad of a decision it was to add UND. This is a clear shot across their bow in telling them to comply with the NCAA. The BSC is in no position to jeopardize any revenues from the NCAA and allowing UND to be a member of the BSC without them addressing their name issue does just that. I also heard that the ND state legislature passed a bill allowing the name to stand, so now UND is stuck in the middle and they are totally screwed.

Here's an interesting article from a few months ago in a native american newpaper. Seems the majority of the Souix forgot to be offended about by the UND mascot.

So the BSC bureaucrats, running for cover because of the bleating of the perennially indignant PC police, are threatening UND unless they cave to this shrill minority. I hope UND and their supporters stick to their guns, but the outcome will likely be that they join the rest of the intimidated schools that were pummeled into changing their name to a color (Stanford) or some parody with no lobbying ability (UCSC bananna slugs).

Who in that camp decides who needs to be protected from the possibility of being unintentionally offended? Why not people of Scandinavian descent as pointed out by SH? Better yet, what about the poor Spartans? After that tough loss on the road in Thermopylae, should we disrespect them by making them sports mascots?

I guess the hippie academics think native americans are too stupid to know when they should be offended, and need to be protected by enlightened quad squatters with more highly developed sensibilities. Now THAT is what should be viewed as offensive.
