Updated Big Sky Awards predictions

I've finally simmered from last night's disappointment and can think clearly now (I think). So how do you think tomorrow's awards will pan out.? Here are my predicitons.

MVP: Damian Lillard, G, Weber State
Defensive Player of Year: Will Cherry, G, Montana
Freshman of Year: Dylan Garrity, G, Sacramento State
Newcomer of Year: Collin Chiverton, F, Eastern Washington
Coach of Year: Wayne Tinkle, Montana

1ST TEAM:
Damian Lillard, G, Weber State
Scott Bamforth, G, Weber State
Will Cherry, G, Montana
Kareem Jamar, G, Montana
Charles Odum, G, Portland State
Chehales Tapscott, F, Portland State

2ND TEAM:
Collin Chiverton, F, Eastern Washington
Cliff Colimon, G, Eastern Washington
Kenny McGowan, G, Idaho State
Chase Grabau, F, Idaho State
Xavier Blount, G, Montana State
John Dickson, F, Sacramento State

HONORABLE MENTION:
Kyle Tresnak, C, Weber State
James Douglas, G, Northern Arizona
Cliff Ederaine, F, Eastern Washington
Derek Selvig, C, Montana
Mike Proctor, F, Northern Colorado
Dylan Garrity, G, Sacramento State
Melvin Morgan, G, Idaho State
Christian Moon, G, Montana State

I would be pissed, but not surprised to see Will Cherry get co-MVP honors will Lillard, simply because of last night's outcome, but that's probably a stretch. The Big Sky rarely gives MVP honors to a guy who wasn't on the regular-season champion team, but it would be absurd not to go with Dame in this case. Expect Tinkle to run away with coach of year. I originally had James Douglas from NAU contending for freshman of the year, but he has faded a bit and Garrity has put up some impressive numbers in the assists column to finish the season.

I made a few small changes on the all-conference teams from my mid-season list. It may look strange, but I honestly think all six first-teamers should be represented by just three teams. Although PSU isn't nearly the caliber of Montana or Weber, Tapscott and Odum's numbers are too good to ignore. I bumped Grabau out of first team, given ISU's late-season decline and him missing time with an injury. :coffee:

Thoughts?

Looks good to me. I was a bit dubious about Kareem being a 1st teamer this year, but have decided, after watching him the other night, and what he has done the past couple of weeks, that he has earned it. I think Art Steward deserves some type of recognition. You can't bump Selvig out of Honorable Mention, even though I think he will end up as a 2nd teamer, but Art is, in my opinion, one of the biggest reasons behind Montana's success. He will be extremely difficult to replace. He is quick, a good shooter, and a beast on the boards. Most importantly, perhaps, is his ability to match up with either an opposing teams SG/SF. He is a true wing. Selvig, even though he doesn't make much of an impact when playing Weber -a lot of that is because of Mahoney, who should get some love too, but won't because he doesn't score a lot of points- is another solid contributer for the Grizz and will be a huge loss in the future for the Grizz. Selvig is one of those special players who is extremely hard to replace. Yes, Weisner is a decent player, but not the same calibre as Selvig.

Finally, what about PSU's center? Lorzeau? He, other than Tres, is the only other true center that is a force in the Sky.

you gotta have a few on the first team at least from the conf champ especially when they went 15-1 which only a few teams have ever done in big sky history.

as for mvp, i would assume lillard would still be unanimous but hawks is right, a player from the champ usually gets it. i could see co-mvp since UM won the title and split with us 1-1. i personally think lillard will be unanimous this year and next year cherry should be unanimous.

in 2007 ewu's stuckey was a 1st rd draft pick and wasn't big sky mvp, david patten of wsu was. ewu though didnt even make the big sky tourney so that was pretty pathetic of ewu.

10 Big Sky MVP's in 33 seasons were on teams that did not win the regular season title. so the odds would be against WSU but it is not uncommon.

Bolded shows years of non champ team to get an MVP award.

Pretty accurate list, I'd say.

I'd probably bump Blount from 2nd team and replace with Proctor. I think Blount's reputation probably took a hit (pardon the pun), and Proctor as a senior who was on last year's champion will get some sentimental votes.

DL is definitely the MVP, with a special nod to Cherry, who would have been a runaway selection in nearly any other year.

Also, I agree that Steward will make the list somewhere, and I think that Jamar is a lock for first team. I also agree Mahoney should probably get some love, but likely won't.

93-94 The Vandals, future Big Sky member, Orlando Lightfoot won the MVP. That season Weber and ISU shared the title.
