USC is looking to fill out its schedule

They are exploring the idea of scheduling a competitive FCS team. Some one tell the AD.
Sorry I did not know how to show the article.

Interesting. IIRC USC and Notre Dame are the only two FBS teams that have never faced an FCS opponent.

2021 and 2023 both have openings at the moment. Those would be the only options for a road BCS game. Plus, if they want an FCS game to win big, there's much better options than Eastern.

From the article I read they are not thinking cupcake.

I found this but I could not locate the original story.
USC senior associate AD Steve Lopes sat down for an interview with The Athletic on USC’s scheduling philosophy and said the Trojans could soon schedule games with FCS opponents.

“If you start looking at the teams that are available, it’s very limited,” Lopes said. “We’re looking at schools that might not even be FBS, which I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. We may get criticized if and when we do it, but everybody does it. … Are you going to die on that sword? You can play very good FCS schools that are better than some of the FBS schools you’ll play, the directional schools you’ll play.”

The purists will be upset by this… but they’ll be the only ones. It won’t affect the Trojans’ College Football Playoff chances — Alabama and Georgia already play FCS opponents each year. USC faces a nine-game Pac-12 regular season, an annual game with Notre Dame and, if the Trojans prove worthy, the Pac-12 North champion in their path to the Playoff.

And it likely won’t affect the Trojans’ gate, either. How many USC fans would have stayed home had the Trojans dropped UNLV from their 2018 opener for a game with Sacramento State?

Perhaps the purists would stay home, but nobody else would.

The purist would already have paid for their season tickets so it does not matter if their butt is in the seat their cash is in the register.

USC doesn’t play FCS schools. I think the same also goes for UCLA, Notre Dame, & Florida State.

Florida State plays FCS teams pretty much every year. UCLA, USC, and Notre Dame are the only schools who haven't played an FCS before. The article notes USC is considering changing their protocol to add FCS teams to the schedule. This makes sense, considering the SEC teams always represented in the playoffs always schedule one and sometimes even two FCS teams.

A type of ECB imo, there should be a representative for all P5 conferences. There’s no benefit for a P5-FBS to schedule FCS teams. You can get the same results from a non-P5 FBS team.

FCS teams tend to be ~half the price of an FBS... that's the main reason. The USC AD did acknowledge that there are FCS teams who are better quality opponents than some FBS teams. I think we all know this. The average fan on the other hand...

At least in the digging I did, some brought up EWU as being a quality team should USC dip into FCS.

USC may be also be thinking their first FCS team better be a team they are assured of winning and win big. With EWU that is not assured. Sac St. or even a UC Davis may be wise. I would cherish a game vs USC as would staff and players (always is nice to be first).

This was my thought. If you want to play an FCS game, you probably want to play one you know you'll win. Under any circumstances, Eastern beating USC would be an upset, but there have been some years when we could certainly make it interesting. Why not play Sac State, they're an in state school that you'll beat 99.99% of the time if you're USC?

The NW schools schedule us because they know they'll sell a few tickets and Eastern is still a halfway decent name on a schedule to NW football fans. The Washington schools are especially encouraged to keep the money in the state.

I believe Iowa St and Iowa are required by their legislature to play N Iowa every other year.
