Looks like we got an early game

You guys will be ok, last time Weber played the Utes it was only like a 14 point game and that was in our sugar bowl year if i remember right.

2008 was a unique and magical season for weber football. i am sure utes were surprised by that one. i was at the game and couldn't believe what i was seeing. but i dont think any of us will be expecting that type of game this fall. we had a lot of fcs all-americans and some nfl players.

that game was also utah's first fcs opponent in 24 years.

fastforward 5 years later and most of us are really sick of these fcs vs fbs (or maybe its just me).

luckily wsu has said it will play only 1 fbs game per yr after 2013 and no more 2 fbs per year.

for me, it used to be fun to play the fbs, but once we got good and playoffs became realistic, then all these fbs games worked against us. no one can afford 2 automatic losses on an 11 game schedule + play in the best fcs league (or top 2-3 conferences).

is there a chance this game wont be a big blow out like we had last yr vs byu? that game was painful to watch plus we accrued injuries.

With the new playoff coming I wouldnt be surprised to see FCS/FBS games go away, a couple conferences have already done away with it.

Weber St. football needs the $$$. These games aren't going away any time soon. :ohno:

If Weber has to play FBS games for $$$, I'd much rather see the Cats playing the Utes, Cougars, or Aggies than anyone else. I like the games against In-state schools better than traveling to Boston College or Texas Tech. And I'm sure that the in-state FBS schools would rather keep the money they are going to spend for an FCS team to stay in-state too.

As for 08...I was with Catcat and we were both SHOCKED by what we were watching. Things could have been a bit closer too, if the Cats would have capitalized on their first drive and scored and wouldn't have turn the ball over two times. Not that Weber would have won, just that the game would have been closer. Was a fun game.

100% agree if we are going to keep our 1 game a year against an FCS team I would like to keep it in state, atleast that gives it some kind of story line. Hoping Weber can make a turn around from last year and compete for a conf title or more. Would be nice to see football in the state as a whole continue to improve.

i actually would like the opposite. no instate fbs games.

reasons:
1. bigger pay: i am assuming we would get bigger paychecks to play out of state since there is no instate discount. but i dont know for sure if its worth it when you add in travel costs. but if its 200-300k more for example for a pay out then i would imagine its more worth it to travel to say texas tech like we have done.

2. lack of respect: you don't get much respect as an instate fcs vs the instate fbs getting blown out. so if your going to lose by 30-50 against an fbs, i would rather it to be a random school out of state that no one cares about than get creamed by usu, byu or utah.

3. vs bcs only: the game vs fbs should only be against bcs conferences (if possible). so this means i would not want to play usu or byu, not sure about utah. overall i have not heard any rumors of big paychecks from any instate. if we have to play this fbs game every yr no matter what and its for sure only going to be 1 and its going to be a loss regardless we should try our hardest to play a big school with big pay. idaho state sure has no problem getting $1 million+ between its 2 annual fbs games. i dont think there are any bcs schools that are thinking they might lose to us so they would rather host isu.

i think these are valid reasons. i realize of course i dont know the specifics and sometimes it may work out better to play at utah. i trust our administration to do what is best for weber. i am VERY happy to see no more 2 fbs a yr too. i really hope this new staff can get us back competitive how mac had us competing. that way freeing up this 2nd fbs game will help us when we have a shot again at making the playoffs. hopefully that could be in the next few years.

Part of the payoff for playing 2 FBS teams per year is the new indoor practice facility and the upgrades to the stadium. The payout for these games is between $200,000 and $500,000. When we play locally, it is on the lower end of that. Some of this happens in basketball as well.

I agree with what catcat is saying. Now that we seem to be over the hump, let's look for the higher paying games and just do one per year. One big key to all of this is how much revenue you can generate on your home front. Ticket sales and donations are critical. Winning goes a long way to generating that kind of income. :coffee:

Agree with catcat & oldrunner...over recent years most of us fans realize the necessary beat downs vs fbs teams for the financial gain...but haven't enjoyed at all watching Wildcats getting slapped around by the big heads instate. Don't expect wins (only victory was suspect, vs. USU in a snow blizzard at Logan) & as said, winning vs. fcs draws the fans support at home games, which is critical. Presently, Weber State has lot to work on there. Always have been against playing USU, U, BYU in football. :twocents:

Weber has come close over the last few years to beating an FBS opponent, should have twice, but I cant stand any of those games, I know we need them, but we need to start getting to the playoffs, only by winning can your fanbase grow, and starting every year 0-2 by a combined 82-23 point difference does not help.

I understand that Weber cant afford to bring teams in from the East Coast, but I am fine with playing conference mates as OOC games, they are FCS, and count towards the playoffs.

That's why I think Weber should try getting Eastern Washington to Stewart Stadium next year, If we are having such a hard time finding OOC FCS foes, lets look in our own backyard. I would rather play other teams from other conferences to, but I would be satisfied with Big Sky OOC games.

I like one FBS game a year. I think its fun for the fans and players. We have been close several times to beating FBS in recent years.. Wyoming twice and CSU once... Hawaii was close at half, USU first half 2011 was close.. I think its fun as a fan. I especially like the in-state games. This year WSU will play 3 in-state teams!! When has this ever happened before? Technically, WSU could win the Beehive Boot...

However, what would a win over Utah do for the program this year? Could a win like that propel WSU to new heights?? Wishful thinking yes, but fun to ponder about.

Yes I know wiki says WSU is not eligible, however, we all agree if we went 3-0 this year, the media would be all over this and it would be awarded..

If Weber managed to go 3-0 against the State, the local media would look at it more as "Boy USU, and Utah must really suck" before ever seeing it as "Wow look at Weber they must be very good".

If Weber were to beat Utah, (yeah right) they better not lose any other game all the way to the chipper or the Utah win means nothing.

 You must be wearing purple colored glasses or smoking some of that purple fog...not likely to happen, but yes, dream on! Playing SUU is great & desired every year, but I think the majority of fans don't agree with you that it's fun to suffer thru the fbs beatings against the Aggies, Cougs, or Utes in football. Fact is, against all but Wyoming & CSU (I'll give credit for that) Wildcats have worn down in second half against the big fbs boys; it's only natural. The instate low payoff & potential injuries at beginning of season aren't worth it! 'Wildcat' is right, the media wouldn't give accolades to Wildcats in a shocking upset (Oh! the Shame!), they would have all their sports analysts working on what's WRONG with the U or USU!!!
