UVU offically joins the WAC

Any thought about it? Living out of state I haven't been able to really follow all of whats happening in Utah sports. Seems to be a good thing for their program.

Only time will tell if it will be a good thing for UVU. The WAC isn't what you think it is. It is really WACked up right now. If the WAC survives, and that is a big IF, it will be difficult for them to establish any kind of identity. It's really just a conglomeration of schools nobody has ever heard of. Travel is going to be expensive and revenue hard to come by. I wouldn't want to be a part of the new WAC. :twocents:

It's good for UVU now that they are in a automatic qualifying conference, but the WAC is not what it used to be, and is just a Great West.2

Just wanted to show everyone on here why Idaho is joining the Sky next summer in all sports except football (most likely will happen eventually). The Vandals don't want to be part of the Great West Conference. I've heard that NMSU is going to be joining the Sun Belt in football (are the Aggies planning on joining for all-sports or are they going to pull an Idaho and join the Southland Conference for all sports and stay in the Sun Belt for football only?). This means, at this time next year, the WAC will have 7 teams: Chicago State, University of Missouri Kansas City, Cal State University Bakersfield, Utah Valley...I don't know if anyone else can see this pattern, but hell I sure can. The Great West merely changed names and became the WAC. Do they deserve an automatic bid to the NCAAs? With Seattle, NMSU, and Idaho yes, without them, I don't think so.

I hope the WAC keeps its auto bid. UVU has had some decent teams in the past. I think it is only fair to give them an Auto bid.

If the WAC deserves an auto bid, then the BSC should get two bids. Actually, I don't think that any league should get more than one third of their teams into the big dance. If you can't finish at least that high in your own conf., you shouldn't get in. The NCAA is really a paper tiger when it comes to the wealthiest conferences. The NCAA could do a lot to insure fair competition, but they won't. Money talks and the little guy walks. The NCAA claims that they want a level playing field, but they really don't. They exist to preserve the status quo.

OK.... off my soap box.

The real head scratcher for me is UMKC. Why in the world did they willingly leave the Summit League for the WAC? Granted, the Summit isn't the most stable (it's vulnerable to the likes of the MVC and Horizon), but it still is better than the WAC. Travel will certainly be worse for UMKC now.

I really do hope that it works out well for UVU. For the new WAC to survive, they will need to be stable, over time. For now, they don't have an identity. Maybe, over time, they can gain an identity. The school that rises to the top of that mess will need to carry the flag, like Gonzaga has for the WCC. It took Gonzaga 20 years to do it. It will be interesting to see if the WAC can even rise to the level of the BSC, let alone the WCC, in basketball. Right now, UVU is probably the 4th or 5th place program in a weak WAC.
