UVU to WAC

UVU and CS-Bakersfield to join the WAC, giving the conference six members, including Idaho. What's the latest on the Vandals? Are they still joining the Big Sky?

WOW! It seems like a downgrade for them. I hope that it, at least, reduces their travel expenses. I'm sure that this will make IdaLOL want to stay in the WAC. It makes it such a powerhouse conf. now.

So, the WAC is dropping football and is going to be an absolute POWER in basketball.
None of this really surprises any of us. USU jumped off the sinking ship just in time, and thankfully for them their football team has become "real". To me that is the reason that the Mtn. West accepted USU.

Laugh all you want but this makes sense for UVU & WAC. WAC needs to survive in basketball (+ other non-football) with 6 members in order for NCAA tourney bid. For UVU, instead of playing schools like NJIT & Chicago St. they will be regionally focused. Do the math...it says that the WAC will do all it can to keep Idaho in for all non-football...and probably win out...bad for Big Sky. :-(

I ain't laughing. Why wouldn't UVU join the WAC? It's a regional conference and it's a big upgrade from the Great West. A conference of Seattle, Denver, New Mexico St, Idaho, Utah Valley, and Cal St Bakersfield is a better basketball conference than the Big Sky. Everyone of these teams, except Seattle (12-15), had a winning record last season. New Mexico St is traditionally better than anyone in the Sky, including Weber. And Denver went 22-9 last season, including wins over St Mary's and Utah St (in Logan), and went 2-0 vs Big Sky teams. They would have won the Big Sky if they had been in it.

I am not laughing at UVU just the WAC. They used to think they were so high and mighty and now the WAC is a shadow of what it was. IMO it should join with the Big West conference. :twocents:

why wasn't uvu invited to the big sky? them and cal poly could complete one school. lol. it would be nice if we actaully played uvu once in a while and not once every 8 years.

Understanding is that UVU, not playing football, wasn't a viable candidate for BSC. Apparently, BSC Commish, salivating to get Idaho (a good idea) said they could join as non-football member, but added the real hope is they will eventually give up football independence and become full-sport member. Idaho has until next July to commit to Big Sky in non-football (WAC rules) for 2014 season...my guessing is they just might be lured into staying in WAC. Basketball Wildcats have UVU on their schedule this season and would expect it becomes regular If HC Hunsaker goes along. Hunsaker said that his recruiting is going to have rise a couple of notches now. In-state recruit competition increases for Weber State, UVU, SUU (the "bottom-feeders" in this state as former HC Cravens said).

I get the feeling that Idaho is far from a done deal for the Big Sky and that we may see them stay in the WAC.

I read that Hunsaker said that without the auto bid some recruits wouldn't even listen to him. Now in a much better conference with an auto bid (the WAC has two years to get to the required 7 teams to keep auto bid) I expect their recruiting to really improve, making D1 quality Utah recruits even harder to attract to Weber. I would expect that Rahe will continue to sign out of state recruits almost exclusively.

And I would agree, play UVU every year. Just replace the Utah game with them. That would give Weber 5 instate games a year.

So, you expect us to lose out on instate recruits to UVU and coach Hunsaker? :wtf:

No, I expect us to continue to lose out on instate recruits to BYU, USU, and Utah. Just saying that UVU being in an improved situation ain't going to help Weber. But whatever is left after BYU, USU, and Utah isn't worth Weber's time anyways. The only player on Weber's team this year from Utah is Jordan Rex, and I wouldn't really call him D1 talent. There isn't enough D1 talent in Utah for all six schools and Weber is at best 4th in line.

IMO The only reason we might be behind the U of U is because they are in the PAC12. They have had and will continue to have a hard time there if they can't keep any of their players around for more than 1 year. They look like USU in football in the 2000's. Winning a small percentage of their games every year and can't keep a coach for more than 3 yrs.

I am ok with that :thumb:
